Dr. James Rogers, associate professor of music, received
Chowan College’s 1996 Excellence in Teaching Award during the
annual commencement exercises May 11
The announcement was made by Dr, B. Franklin Lowe Jr., vice
president for academic affairs, and was a highlight o'f the college’s
148th graduation ceremonies held in front of the historic McDowell
Columns building. Rogers, who was selected for the honor by vote
of the faculty, was presented a framed certificate and a monetary
gift. By receiving the honor, he will also serve as faculty marshal
for the 1996-97 academic session.
In making the presentation, Lowe said that selection for the
teaching award was based on “effectiveness as a teacher, continued
professional growth and availability to students during and beyond
the normal class and office hours.” Rogers was also cited for his
participation and leadership in college programs and extracurricular
events.
Joining the faculty in the fall of 1990, Rogers received his
undergraduate degree at Jacksonville State University' and the
master’s degree in music from Georgia State University. He earned
his doctoral degree at the University of Alabama.
In his service as faculty marshal, Rogers will lead all academic
processionals during the coming academic term and cany the
ceremonial college mace.

close Chowan’s 148th year
More than 100 graduates were awarded degrees in beautiful spring
weather on Saturday, May 11, as Chowan closed the 148th academic
session.
The impressive ceremonies were held in front of the historic McDowell
Columns building before a large crowd of family, friends, faculty and staff
members.
The Class of 1996 was the third class to receive baccalaureate degrees
since the college resumed four year status. A total of 71 seniors were
presented their bachelor’s degrees and 30 students were awarded associ
ate degrees.
Dr. Herman E. Collier Jr.. president, presided at the annual commence
ment exercises and conferred the degrees, which were individually framed.
He was assisted by Dr. B. Franklin Lowe Jr., vice president for
academic affairs, and Darrell Nicholson, registrar.
The traditional commencement addresses were presented
by Florence Warren, an elementary education major from
Salisbury, and Dr. John H. Davis, professor in the department
of languages and literature.
Dr. Davis told the graduates that as they leave Chowan
“you carry part of this college and its people with you.”
He reminded the class “your degree is worth what is put
into it and gains worth as efforts continue. Give it meaning in
and with you life. Like
Jesus’ fishes and leaves,
education is the meal that
keeps giving, but you must
participate or you go
hungry.”

marshal, opened the exercises with a
devotional period and special music was
provided by the Potecasi Philharmonic,
under the direction of Dr. James M.
ChamWee.
Dr. James Rogers, professor of music,
was awarded the 1996 Excellence in
Teaching award and was presented a
framed certificate and monetary gift. He
will also have the honor to serve as faculty marshal for the 1996-97
academic year.
In making the presentation which is one of the highlights of the
commencement exercises. Dr. Lowe commended Rogers for his “commit
ment to the teaching profession and genuine interest in students.”
Dr. Lowe also presented plaques to Chistina Jean Jump, a graduating
elementary education major from Portsmouth. Va., and Eric Lynn Spencer of
Grand) , who received his degree in mathemtics, in recognition of their
achieving the highest academic averages in the Class of 1996.
