during Homecoming football halftime
A classic Homecoming was celebrated at
Chowan during the weekend of November 2.
Complete with golf, alumni reunion, bonfire,
recognition luncheon, parade, royalty, games
and sports. Homecoming ‘96 entered the
Chowan history books.
The weekend kicked off with golf at the
Beechwood Country Club Friday afternoon.
Cheerful alums met classmates and socialized
over hors d’oeuvres and old yearbooks at
Hertford Academy Friday evening and a huge
crowd assembled later that night for a roaring
bonfire near the lighthouse. Complete with pep
band and athletic awards, spirits were raised as
alumni president. Gary Williams ‘65, of Suffolk.
VA. and Antuan Hawkins ‘98, SGA vice
president from Kinston, NC, lit the fire.
Intermittent showers did not dampen spirits
for the morning parade around Squirrel Park, as
the pep band provided lively music from the
veranda of the Columns Building. Following
the parade, new officers and board members
were elected at the annual meeting of the
Alumni Association.
During the Alumni & Friends Luncheon
held Saturday. Kenneth David Lyons ‘85, a
native of Norfolk, VA. was presented with the
1996 Distinguished Alumni Award. Having
graduated with a degree in photography,
Lyons is an award-winning photojoumalist
with the Daily Press in Newport News. VA.
An Ahoskie resident. Jean Sharp, was
awarded the Chowan College Community
Service Award for her lifetime of outstanding
commitment to local service organizations by
the alumni association. Inducted into the
Chowanian Society were: Nancy Rawls
Barden ‘56, Betty Taylor Hobbs ‘56, Shirley B.
Lewis ‘56, Benjamin Rich ‘56 and Annie Mae

Superball golf returns with ‘97 classic
Plans are underway for the sixth annual
Chowan Classic Superball Golf Tournament.
Upon the identification of sufficient sponsors.
Chowan aims to host the event Friday, June 6,
1997. For the fifth year, the tournament will be
held at Beechwood Country Club, where the
college has already received the Club’s appro
val for the June 6 date.
The event has become one of the most
successful annual golfing events in the
Roanoke-Chowan area. To insure the tour
nament’s continuance and to improve this
year’s event, the college will again be soliciting
for major corporate sponsors along with hole
and prize sponsors.
Last year’s event, with corporate sponsor
ship b>- Kerr Group. Inc., Sprint Carolina
Telephone and 360 Communications was a
huge success. With picture-perfect weather,
eighty-four alumni and friends participated in
the competition and the awards luncheon that
followed.
Prizes included trophies and $ 1,400 in gift
certificates awarded to members of the first,
second, and third place teams in each of two
flights; Snake Eyes wedges or putters for the
winners of the longest drive and closest to the
pin contest; a Snake Eyes putter, a dozen
Titleist balls and tickets to a preseason
Redskins-Bengals game for the winner of a
separate putting contest; and many door
prizes that included golf clubs, balls, umbrel
las and promotional items.
Thanks to the sponsorship of Charles H.
Jenkins Company, a 1996 Buick Century was
“up for grabs” to anyone who could score a
hole-in-one on the appropriate hole. Unfortu
nately, the car was not awarded.
As a fund-raising event for the college, last
year’s event brought in more than $3,300 for
scholarship assistance to attract quality
students to Chowan and assist those who
would otherwise be unable to afford a
Chowan education.
If you would be like to receive registration
information when plans have been finalized
