Career Center provides clues for “Life after Chowan” The bright red brochure reads. “Welcome to the Chowan College Career Center” followed by a smiling face. Career Center supervisor. Candice Whichard, wears a smiling face, too. Long before school began this fall. Whichard, along with Linda Tripp, director of counseling and career development, began assembling a laboratory of multimedia comput ers, the latest in software and video equip ment for the new center in Penny Hall. With three individual workstations, the center allows students to discover and define career paths, determine jobs relating to interests and abilities, e.xplore characteristics and requirements of specific occupations and develop plans to enter the occupation of their choice. Many useful sources of information can be found among resource materials on various majors and careers, interview tips, cover letters, resumes, the value of the Internet, networking, job hunting, internships and graduate schools. In addition to computers, the center is outfitted with reference books, videos, cassette tapes and magazines. The Career Center also offers a variety of free pamphlets, job applications, magazines and test booklets for the GRE, TOEFL, VCAT, PCAT, AHPAT, SAT I & SAT II. According to Tripp, the new center is already serving many individual students per day, not including class groups, and quickly outgrowing its boundaries. Tripp adds that she would like to add 4 additional worksta tions in the near fiiture.
