Ott. the United States Air Force Air Combat Comrnand Heritage of America Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m., January 23, in Turner Auditorium. Playing music ranging from the best of the “Big Band” era to mainstream jazz fusion, the band has received much critical acclaim for its ability to adapt its program to the occasion and to the musical preferences of its audiences. The group’s versatility to perform every musical style, including classical, country and rock, has earned them critical acclaim throughout the Eastern seaboard and unique arrangements by Toshiko Akiyoshi. Rob McConnell and Maynard Ferguson provide contemporary styles that add variety and contrast to each performance. Formed in 1953, and headquartered at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, the band members come from a w ide variety of musical and educational backgrounds from across the United States forming a “melting pot" of American talent. Director Joseph Ott. graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor of arts in performance degree. Prior to joining the Air Force in 1985. Ott performed with the Harrisburg Symphony, Red Skelton and Tony Bennett Orchestras. Ice Capades and Glenn Miller Orchestra. His honors include the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival Outstand ing Soloist Award, the Notre Dame Jazz Festival Outstanding Soloist Award and the George S. Wescott Band Award. Other members of the group have performed professionally with artists Sarah Vaughn. Bob Hope. Roger Williams. Chet Atkins and the Beach Boys, among others.
