Job Recruiting Combines Aspects Commando Raid, Church Picnic MURFREESBORO - Job re cruiting, which combines aspects at a commando raid and a church picnic, is executed with light ning speed at Chowan College and a good time is generally had by all. Just recently, for example, nu merous Industrial recruiters representing many employers arrived on campus, were treated to meals in the college cafeteria, interviewed students and van ished, but not until after they hired 43 students and booked dozens of others for further in terviews with their personnel departments. Not all eagerly courted pros pects will receive so much as an associate of arts degree. In stead, some will be handed cer tificates showing that they have completed various secretarial, business, clerical, printing and other programs which prepare students for skilled jobs in many classifications. Chowan prepares many young men and women to serve In oc cupations which do not require a number of scholastic degrees, but call for skills for which trade schools and other insti tutions are imable to provide training. Naturally, occupational training is not all that Chowan offers. As in other two-year col leges, most students take aca demic training or ‘diversity” courses which place heavy stress on the liberal arts and sciences and give students a start toward major studies they can pursue after transferring to a four- year school. But occupational programs do provide education for many students and demand for graduates is even greater than recent hirings would indi cate. For one thing, many students being interviewed by recruiters are choosy enough not to take the first job offered. One, re- cently turning down numerous otters, said, ‘1 want to find out what’s available all over, and what I find out will eventually lead me to the right Job.” Oth ers already had jobs and par ticipated in interviews just to see what rival companies were ottering. Also, many other stu dents are not seeking out re cruiters because they have al ready lined up work or will lo cate it through their teachers, many of whom are fresh from Industry and maintain close con tacts with employers. Most c4 Chowan’s faculty members are experienced in other fields of employment and have many con tacts outside of educational cir cles.
