Wolfskin selected as outstanding college academic advisor
MURFREESBORO - Dr. G.
Kenneth Wolfskill, chairman of ihe
department of language and literature at
Chowan, has been selected as an
outstanding college academic advisor by
the National Recognition Program for
Academic Advising of the American
College Testing (ACT) in Iowa City,
Iowa.
He was named a Certificate of Merit
recipient in recognition of his
demonstrated abilities as an advisor in
nationwide competition, according to
the NACADA selection committee.
Award winners will be honored at an
awards brunch on October 9 at the
annual NACADA Annual Conference in
Louisville, Kentucky.
Dr. Wolfskill was nominated by his
students and advisees at Chowan for his
dedication to them as their advisor. He
has served for 18 years as an academic
advisor at the college and spends
approximately 10% of his time advising
34 advisees in addition to his duties as
professor and chairman of the de
partment.
"In the judgment of the Committee,
Dr. Wolfskill has consistently evidenced
the qualities associated with the
outstanding advising of students,” stated
David Goldenberg, a member of the
selection committee.
"I am very appreciative of this
recognition,” states Dr. Wolfskill. ' I
believe it is important for teachers to be
rccognized for academic advising because
it is something extra that we do.
Because I enjoy working with students,
I especially enjoy my role as an
academic advisor at Chowan."
Dr. Wolfskill received the B.A. from
Samford University, the M.A. from the
University of Kentucky and the Ph.D.
from the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. As an English professor
at Chowan, he is a favorite among
students, according to Austine Evans,
director of academic advisement for the
college.
"Dr. Wolfskill provides suidents with
a supportive acadcmic environment in
which to develop a better understanding
of themselves and the encouragement to
assume greater responsibility for their
decisions," states Evans. ”His
exemplary service has been recognized
in all sectors of the campus.
Administrators, faculty and students are
quick to point out his virtues."
Using a survey instrument, students
rated Dr. Wolfskill positively on every
item on which they interacted with him.
According to the students, his particular
strengths were in providing accurate
information and monitoring their pro
gress.
Student Amy Mannarino, an English
major, stated, "When I came to
Chowan, low motivation and academic
failure were consistent with my daily
life. 'Goal' was merely football
terminology to me. The standards I now
have concerning all aspects of my life,
limit themselves at excellence alone,
and I have only the highest academic
career expectations. I directly credit these
changes to Dr. Wolfskill's attentive
advisement."
Wolfskill, who was instrumental in
starting the new Freshman Experience
program at Chowan, which orients new
students to college life, will teach one
of those courses in the fall semester.
He is married to Jayne Wolfskill, has
