Kenneth Wolfskill, chairman of ihe department of language and literature at Chowan, has been selected as an outstanding college academic advisor by the National Recognition Program for Academic Advising of the American College Testing (ACT) in Iowa City, Iowa. He was named a Certificate of Merit recipient in recognition of his demonstrated abilities as an advisor in nationwide competition, according to the NACADA selection committee. Award winners will be honored at an awards brunch on October 9 at the annual NACADA Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Wolfskill was nominated by his students and advisees at Chowan for his dedication to them as their advisor. He has served for 18 years as an academic advisor at the college and spends approximately 10% of his time advising 34 advisees in addition to his duties as professor and chairman of the de partment. "In the judgment of the Committee, Dr. Wolfskill has consistently evidenced the qualities associated with the outstanding advising of students,” stated David Goldenberg, a member of the selection committee. "I am very appreciative of this recognition,” states Dr. Wolfskill. ' I believe it is important for teachers to be rccognized for academic advising because it is something extra that we do. Because I enjoy working with students, I especially enjoy my role as an academic advisor at Chowan." Dr. Wolfskill received the B.A. from Samford University, the M.A. from the University of Kentucky and the Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As an English professor at Chowan, he is a favorite among students, according to Austine Evans, director of academic advisement for the college. "Dr. Wolfskill provides suidents with a supportive acadcmic environment in which to develop a better understanding of themselves and the encouragement to assume greater responsibility for their decisions," states Evans. ”His exemplary service has been recognized in all sectors of the campus. Administrators, faculty and students are quick to point out his virtues." Using a survey instrument, students rated Dr. Wolfskill positively on every item on which they interacted with him. According to the students, his particular strengths were in providing accurate information and monitoring their pro gress. Student Amy Mannarino, an English major, stated, "When I came to Chowan, low motivation and academic failure were consistent with my daily life. 'Goal' was merely football terminology to me. The standards I now have concerning all aspects of my life, limit themselves at excellence alone, and I have only the highest academic career expectations. I directly credit these changes to Dr. Wolfskill's attentive advisement." Wolfskill, who was instrumental in starting the new Freshman Experience program at Chowan, which orients new students to college life, will teach one of those courses in the fall semester.
