14 1991 Chowan Opener Dr. Garrot receives teaching award Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, vicc president for academic affairs, presented this year's Excellence in Teaching Award to Dr. Carl L. Garrott, professor of foreign language in the department of language and literature. This prestigious award goes to the outstanding teacher during the year as voted upon by the other members of the college faculty. Dr. Carl Garrott, professor of foreign language, was awarded the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award as Chowan concluded its I43rd academic year with commencement cxercises last May. This award goes to the outstanding teacher during the year as voted upon by other member of the collegc faculty. ‘ Dr. Garrott has taught in the de partment of language and literature at Chowan since 1984. He holds degrees from Kentucky State University and Tennessee Stale University in French and Spanish; from Western Kentucky University in Frcnch and education; and received the Ed.D from the University of Kentucky in foreign language and education. Since he has been at Chowan, he has begun the Kappa Sigma chapter of the Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Honor Society for students and is a favorite among students of foreign language at Chowan. President Jerry F. Jackson conferred associate degrees on 137 graduates. Four students were awarded three-year dip lomas in commercial art. Three students received one-year diplomas and eight students graduated with the highest academic honors. The Honorable G. William Whitehurst. U.S. Congres.sman from Virginia from 1969 until 1987, delivered the commencement address. Charlotte Sophia Pitt, from Nassau, Bahamas, the graduating class president, presented a Chowan flag designed by the sophomore class to the college in memory of Dr. Earl H. Parker, the late professor of religion and philosophy who was awarded the Excellence in Teaching and awarded the previous year. Mrs. Earl (Liba) Parker was presented with a replica of the flag and said, "My family and I are deeply grateful. Dr. Parker loved Chowan College, the students, and he loved to teach. I want to thank you, the graduating students, and may life be good to you," said Mrs. Parker. Graduation exercises concluded another successful year for Chowan. One graduate, Jemeul Johnson, from East Orange, New Jersey, came to Chowan from Rochester Technical Institute in New York to study printing technology at a smaller school where he could get more "hands-on" training. "I've learned a lot," he said. "The professors here really care and give you extra attention."
