Sports Mart Main & 3rd St. 398-5030 Murfreesboro Chowan opens 144th year on August 28 Chowan College will open its doors for the 144ih year to new and returning students on August 28 when classes begin following four days of orien tation, meetings with faculty advisors, and registration. Freshmen and transfer students are scheduled to arrive Saturday, August 24 with class registration beginning on Tuesday, August 27. The three days of orientation include a social orientation called "Life Outside the Classroom" on Saturday evening for new students. Small group sessions of new students and resident advisors will take place on Saturday afternoon to orient freshmen to Chowan. On Sunday, students meet in Turner Auditorium in the afternoon to meet their faculty advisors. That evening all students are invited to dance in the Braves Den Student Center featuring the band "Power Play." Academic advisement continues on Monday with entertainment by Kyle Davis in the afternoon at the alumni gazebo. A President's Reception for new and transfer students will be hosted by President and Mrs. Jackson at the Ella Cobb Camp President's Home at 8:00 p.m. that evening. Entertainment con tinues each day at the gazebo on Tuesday and Wednesday as students complete regisu-ation and begin classes for the year. Faculty and staff prepare for the fall semester opening with a workshop in Marks Hall Auditorium on August 22 and 23. The workshop is being led this year by consultant Patti Crane of Communicorp, Atlanta; Ga., who will lead faculty and staff in a workshop on motivating students, developing posi tive relationships between faculty/staff and students; recruitment and retention of students. Dr, B. Franklin Lowe Jr., vice president for academic affairs, will conduct a session on faculty ranking and proposed new procedures for awarding tenure and faculty rank. On Friday morning. Dr. Jack Allen, Associate executive director, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, will talk with faculty/staff about the transition from two-year to four-year status. The annual family picnic will be held on Thursday evening in the Braves Den Student Center for all faculty/staff and their families. A number of special events arc planned for the fall semester this year. Homecoming is set for October 5, with the class of 1966 planning a big "silver anniversary" reunion. The theme for this year's homecoming is "A New Day Dawns" at Chowan and the Braves will play Georgia Military at 2:00 p.m. in Garrison Stadium.
