2 1993 Chowan Opener Chowan to begin return to four-year status MURFREESBORO — Cho wan College will open its doors for the 146th year on Tuesday, Aug. 25, when classes begin following four days of orientation, meetings with faculty advisors and registration. The 1993-94 academic year will be a milestone in the history of the college, because the first senior class will be enrolled since Chowan returned to four-year status. The seniors in the Class of 1994 will be the first graduates to receive bachelor's degrees since May, 1937, when Chowan be came a two-year institution. Freshmen and transfer students are scheduled to arrive on campus Saturday, Aug. 21. whpn rgjj- dence halls open at 8 a.m. The new students will meet in historic McDowell Columns on Sunday evening, Aug. 22, to hear Dr. Jerry F. Jackson, the school president, extend an official wel come to the college. Sloan Holliday, president of the Student Government Association, will also extend greetings to the new students. Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, vice president for academic affairs, will assign faculty members to serve as academic advisers and I i //• Evans Company I { students will then accompany the professors to other locations on campus to begin the preparation for classes. Academic advisement contin ues on Monday, Aug. 23, when the new students meet with advis ers in the morning. Returning students, including seniors, meet with advisers in the afternoon. Following dinner on Monday evening. You Laugh, You Lose will be presented in Turner Audi torium of McDowell Columns. The program, billed as the ulti mate in total audience participa tion, provides prizes for partici pants who survive one minute without laughing at the comedy acts prcssntcd. Following the en tertainment, all new students will meet with the staffs of their re spective residence halls for intro ductions and orientation for resi dence hall living. The meetings will be held in the lobby of each residence hall. A president's reception for new and transfer students will be hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Jackson at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the Ella Cobb Camp President's Home. Faculty and staff prepared for the fall semester opening with a workshop which began Thurs day. The annual family picnic will be held Wednesday evening in the Braves Den Student Center for all faculty and staff members and their families. The fall convocation on Tues day, Aug. 31, will be the first of many special events scheduled for the fall semester. Tim Wilson, newly appointed campus minister, will be the speaker. Dr. John Bunn will deliver the keynote address for the Founders Day Convocation to be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12, in obser vance of the anniversary of ChQwaM's fcuriding. Dr. Bunn is the son of Dr. B.D. Bunn, the president of Chowan fi'om 1949 to 1951. The first annual Senior Class Dinner will be held SepL 27 in the President's Dining Room. Kevin Clary, director of alumni services, will preside at the inaugural event to feature an address by a member of the Class of 1937, the last class to receive bachelor's degrees be fore the college changed its status to a junior college. Jeff Grant, president of the Class of 1994, also will speak. Homecoming is set for Satur day, Oct. 16, and will feature the traditional alumni association meeting and class reunions. The homecoming parade will begin on Jones Drive and follow a route through downtown Murfreesboro before returning to the campus. At the traditional homecoming football game the Chowan Braves will meet Ferrum College, an old archrival when both institutions were junior colleges. The game will begin at 2 p.m. in Garrison Stadium. The "Hdl of Fame Day" is scheduled Satur day, Nov. 13, and the Braves will host Lees-McRae. The 1994 in ductees into Chowan’s Sports Hail of Fame will be introduced during halftime ceremonies with official induction activities to be held later in the evening during the Hall of Fame banquet Mid-term break will begin on Friday, Oct. 22, with classes re suming on Wednesday, Oct. 27. The usual Thanksgiving holiday period will begin at noon Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving Day and continue until Monday, Nov. 29, when classes resume at 8 a.m. The fall semester will conclude with examinations from Dec. 10- 15.
