2 1995 Chowan Opener Chowan begins 148th year of service As Chowan College begins the 148th year of service in Christian higher education, it continues to earn the respect and reputation as an outstanding lib eral arts college offering quality academic programs. Founded in 1848 as the Chowan Baptist Female Insti tute, Chowan is the second-old est of North Carolina's seven Baptist institutions. The campus landmark is his toric McDowell Columns, which was constructed in 1851 and named in honor of one of the first presidents. Most of the campus facilities are of modem design with 16 contemporary buildings provid ing housing and classrooms for about 800 students. The campus sports and recrea tion center is the Jesse Helms Physical Education Center, which houses basketball and racquetball courts, two gymna siums, an Olympic-size swim ming pool and several weight and exercise rooms. The Helms Center provides seating for 3,000 spectators for athletic events and other pro grams, such as the annual North Carolina Symphony perfor mance. Graduation exercises also have been held in the cen ter. Entertainment variety offered at Braves Den A variety of entertainment and recreation is available to stu dents at Chowan College. The events are coordinated through the director of student activities, Melissa Hadley, whose office is in the Braves Den Student Center. Located adjacent to Lake Vann, the student center is the focal point for on-campus enter tainment One popular place in the stu dent center is the lounge with a wide-screen television set The center also provides a conference room, a balcony for lounging, a video game room and an area for pool and ping-pong. The center of the facility is used for roller skating. Outdoor volleyball and bas ketball courts are at the student center. Students may check out a wide assortment of games and may use canoes on Lake Vann, which is located behind the cen ter. Also housed in the Braves Den is the college post office, the Student Government Asso ciation office, facilities for the student newspaper staff, a Laun- dromaf^flti'Sfi^bar. McSweeney Hall, which houses the Texie Camp Marks Computer Center, has about 75 computers to meet the increas ing need of computer services for students. The computer labo ratories, cited as the "brain cen ter of the campus,” provide addi tional opportunities for students to have access to the latest computer equipment and net works. A new course offering intro duced several years ago. College 101, is designed to orient freshmen to college life and build the skills they will need for success in the classroom. The college also offers bache lor's degrees in applied science, business administration, graphic design, studio art, English, his tory, liberal studies, mathemat ics, music, printing production.
