Baltimore Batted
By Braves, 49-0
By MORGAN DICKERMAN
The Braves routed Baltimore
Community College, 49-0, in front
of a packed stadium &turday
night September 14. Coach
Garrison’s troops put on a fine
offensive and defensive display
for the students, fans, and
alumnus who came for the
Coastal Conference clash.
The Braves accounted for 389
total yards and 27 first downs to
53 yards and four first downs for
the Red Devils of Baltimore.
Chowan took an early 3-0 lead
on a 27 yard field goal by
Sophomore Junior Creech of
Smithfield, N.C. The field goal
was set up by an awesome ground
attack climaxed by a 37 yard
run by Sophomore Waddell
Whitehead of Tarboro, N.C.
After the kickoff, the Red
Devils fumbled the ball, and it
was recovered by sophomore
defensive end Larry Roidgers of
Elm Wood Park, N.J. The Braves
capitalized on this as sophomore
tailback Robbie Barrow of
Morehead City pushed it over
from eight yards out to make the
score 10-0 when Creech booted
the pat. The Red Devils were
never in the game.
In the second quarter, Brave
sophomore quarterback Dave
Cameron of Winston-Salem, N. C.
faded back and threw a 15 scoring
strike to sophomore flanker Ken
Dark of Graham, N. C. Creech’s
pat was again good, and the
Braves went into the locker room
with a 17-0 halftime lead.
Things never changed in the
next half as Chowan came out
and took up where they left off.
Sophomore halfback Bill Brock of
High Point, N. C. went over from
the one. Next it was time for the
defense to score and score they
did! Freshman defensive back
Jerre Southern of Winston Salem,
N. C. picked off a “pot pass” at
the 13 yard line and took it over.
Next freshman quarterback
David Keller took over the of
fense and produced two touch
downs behind the excellent
blocking line which set backs free
the whole night with crunching
blocks. Keller scored once on a
sweep from seven yards out and
threw a perfect strike to fresh
man back Jerry Neville of Chapel
Hill, N.C. sophomore tailback
Mike O’Connell from Fredonia,
N.Y. also got in the scoring act as
he pushed it over from the one
yard line.
Belk Hall and Parker were co
winners in the “Chowan Spirit
Bucket” award, but the real
winners were Coach Garrison
and the Braves.

As stated in our handbooks,
there are many athletic activities
that will be going on for the
students throughout the year.
Besides the intramural football
that is taking place now, there
will be volleyball, basketball, and
softball games among others.
The men’s and women’s in
tramural programs sponsor
tournaments and championships
for these athletic events.
Chowan’s intramural teams also
compete with intramural teams
of the colleges in the Cavalier-
Tar Heel Conference. The
Chowan men have won the
conference championship in 1966,
1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1972.
Chowan’s girls are the current
champions.
Intramural sports play a part
in winning the Presidents Cup
Competion which will lie awarded
to the dorm with the most out
standing record at the end of the
year.
Reminder
The Student Handbook also
reminds us that when not
scheduled tor use by varsity or
intramural teams, the gym is
open to all Chowan College

members at the following hours:

Circle K Makes Plans
By MORGAN DICKERMAN
The Braves uped the record
Saturday night September 21
when they defeated conference
foe Potomac State College 7-3 in a
thrilling contest which was not
decided until a last second pass
was intercepted by freshman
linebacker Tony Harris of Rich
mond, Va.
Penalties and mistakes
plagued Head Coach Jim
Garrison’s Braves and if not for a
stout defensive effort, Chowan
may have been on the other side
of the won-loss column. Playing
in front of an inspired crowd
which contained cheerleaders
from area high schools who were
attending the game as part of a
“Cheerleader Day”, the Braves
had to wait until the third quarter
to strike paydirt and their lead
was never relinquished.
The Braves fumbled on the first
play of the game and some more
mistakes led one to think Chowan
would be run out of their own
stadium but the defense arose to
the occasion and limited the
Catamounts to a field goal.
The defense was to go on and
hold the visitors to only nine
yards rushing the entire night. On
the other hand, the Braves were
churning out 246 yards rushing,
and the defense was led by
sophomore Lorenzo Kenan of
Rose Hill, N.C. with 13 tackles.
A dropped pass and a Potomac
State defensive play, which
resulted in a Chowan fumble
recovered by the Catamounts,
quenched two Brave’s scoring
threats and the half ended.

At the Circle K meeting on
Tuesday, September 24, the
members discussed sponsoring
another Powder-Puff Football
Game. A committee was ap
pointed to make plans for this
event.
The Circle K will have a coke
booth at Homecoming. This will
enable the club to increase their
funds.
Then in the third quarter, the
Braves hit paydirt and the lead
was never in doubt until the last
minute of the game.
The Catamounts used a 36-yard
pass to advance them to the
Chowan 45 yard line. Many plays
later found the Catamounts on
the Braves’ 11 yard line.
Then the Catamounts advanced
down to the Braves five yard line
but the Braves defense stiffened
and threw the visitors for a one
yard loss. With eight seconds left
to go the visitors called time out,
and the stage was set for the
dramatic ending. The air did not
clear until Harris came up with
the game winning interception to
preserve the game for the
Braves.
This weeks winner of the
“Chowan Spirit Bucket” was
Belk Hall and the cheerleaders of
Northern Nash of Rocky Mount
were awarded the “Braves Spirit
Cup” for their fine effort.
