A record number of 10 students have been named to the President’s List for straight A work during the fall semester at Chowan College. The previous record was eight recorded in 1972 and again in 1973. Chowan students also produced academic records for the highest percentage of the student body named to the Dean’s and Honors lists. Fifty-five students were named to the Dean’s List for maintaining a grade average between 3.50-3.99 on a 4.00 system and 106 to the Honors List for recording a B average with no grade lower than C. During the fall semester a total of 171 students representing approximately 17 percent of Chowan’s enrollment of 1,009 students earned a place on one of the three honors lists. This was also a record for the highest percentage. Christmas Went to Pinewood Manor By HARGUS TAYLOR Chaplain, Chowan College It was a “surprise” Christmas for the forty residents of Pinewood Manor Rest Home, Ahoskie, complete with a visit from Santa Claus — as they were led in worship and song by some 15 members of Chowan College’s Baptist Student Union - Campus Christian Fellowship on Wed nesday evening, Dec. 11. The presence of the BSU group was not unexpected, for the members of the Baptist Student Union at Chowan have been making bi-weekly visits to Pinewood Manor for the past 3% years. Nor was there anything unusual about the worship and song. These — along with oc casional periods of recreation and personal sharing — have become standard “fare,” an ticipated and welcomed by residents and students, alike. It was even “natural” to sing a goodly number of Christmas carols on this occasion of a visit by the campus group just prior to their Christmas hoUday. Then, as the students began to sing “Here Comes Santa Claus,” in strode the old gentleman, himself — with a “Ho! Ho! Ho!” and carrying a pack filled with gifts. Upon being questioned by one of the residents, Santa (alias Ronnie West, ministerial student from Louisburg) contended that his pack contained the most precious gifts money could buy. “He’s right! They are even better than gold,” exclaimed one of the excited recipients as she opened her neatly-wrapped package to discover a copy of Good News For Modern Man. After distributing a gift of a New Testament to each of the individual residents, Santa called upon Miss Rebekah Page, assistant manager of Pinewood Manor, to accept a special gift for the Home. Together they un veiled a large painting of “The Last Supper,” — a painting just the right size for display above the mantelpiece in Pinewood’s new assemUy room. Santa and his 15 “helpers” from Chowan’s BSU then joined the residents for refreshments, fellowship, and conversation. Since ea^ resident and each student knew that it would be over a month (following Christmas holidays) before getting together again, the conversations extended longer than usual, and the “good-byes” were a bit more difficult to ex press.
