PAGE 6— Smoke Signals, Wednesday, September 17, 1975 Chowan Loses Edge in Closing Moments Baltimore Community College drove 61 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown to erase a Chowan College 10-7 halftime lead and defeat the Braves, 14-10, in the season opening game for both teams here Saturday, Sept. 13. Baltimore scored first to serve notice the outcome would not be the same as last year when Chowan won 49-0. Tailback Scott Riley ran eight yards on the second play after a fumble recovery at Chowan’s eight. Sam Varano kicked the first of two extra points to give the Red Devils a 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, William Hinton of Gatesville kicked a 20-yard field goal to give the Braves toeir first points of the season. Before the half ended, defensive back Larry Holbert of Virginia Beach gave Chowan the lead on a dazzling 95-yard run after making his second in terception of the game. Holbert stole the ball from the intended receiver, danced away from several would-be tacklers, cut to Baltimore’s sideline, and outran several Red Devils to the endzone. Hinton’s kidc provided Chowan a 10-7 lead. With the defenses dominating the game, Chowan’s lead held up until Baltimore began a drive from its own 39 with nine minutes left in the game. With the hard running Riley carrying almost every time, the Red Devils penetrated deep into Braves’ territory. Then sophomore quarterback Robert Jones faked to Riley who punged into the center of the line drawing the Chowan defenders to him. Jones swept end for a big gain to keep the rally alive. Riley ran the final eight yards uup the middle for his second score and the winning margin. Defensively, Chowan was paced by linebackers Craig Vosler of Virginia Beach and Richard Fowler of Tabor City and end John Buffaloe of Jackson. All are freshmen. Baltimore’s final TD was the only long drive of the afternoon. Chowan could not get its offense moving with fumbles, two in terceptions of quarterback Jeff Dean passes, and hard defensive play by Baltimore keeping the Braves in the hole most of the game. Chowan will try to even its season and Coastal Conference records at 1-1 when it meets Potomac State in Keyser, W. Va.
