I Page 4 — Smoke Signals, Wednesday, November 11, 1981 Fast Finish Puts Lady Braves In Volleyball Regional Finals By THERESA MANTAS Chowan’s volleyball team made it to the regionals with a fast finish to wind up a 25-13 season. Traveling to Catonsville, Md. on the October 26 weekend, the I-ady Braves lost to Catonsville and Nassau, but downed Rockville. Halloween Weekend put the I-ady Braves in the running. In the first con test against William and Mary, Coach Janet Collins said, "The girls didn’t settle down until the second game, and becailse of errors in the third game it cost us the-match.” Although the game against Catonan'ille did not show it, Mrs. Col lins feels the girls did a good job. “The girls put up a fight, but need to cut down on errors,” she said. The standing is now 21-12. The I-ady Braves played Bennett College next, coming away with a victory of 15-8, 15-2. “They played a good game, and made a good team effort,” com mented Mrs.-Collins. The volleyball team then played a second match at home against Catonsville and again lost. Elizabeth City State and Meredith were defeat^ at Elizabeth City. The Braves then played ECSU on November 5 and won once more leav ing them with a record of 25-13. Co-Captains Cheryl Hendrix and Ar- milia Alexander feel their chances in the regionals are very good. They are excited about going and look forward to playing good volleyball. The regionals were scheduled for November 13-14 at Spartenburg, S.C. If the volleyball players win the regionals they will advance to the na tionals at Catonsville, Md. Braves Smother Wesley, Attack While Rolling to 56-7 Victory Special to Smoke Signals DOVER, Del. — The Chowan Braves continued their winning ways October 24 as they rolled over the Wolverines from Wesley College here by a score of 56-7. The game was never in doubt as Ed die Isley scored his first of three touchdowns with 11; 28 left in the first quarter on a 25 yard run. Keith Myers, who was 7 of 7 on point after kicks for the day, made the score 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Braves put 21 points on the board in the second quarter. The first score came at the 11:50 mark on a Peery Agee pass to Fred Banks cover ing 33 yards. Myers made good on the conversion with 7:28 remaining in the period. Isley again scored on a 21 yard run with Myers making good on the PAT. As the half drew to a close, Agee again teamed up with Banks for their second touchdown of the day on a 10 yard pass play. After the Myers kick, the Braves went into the locker room leading 28-0. As usual, the Chowan defense kept the Wolverines under wraps all day allowing the Wolverines minus 16 yards, coming on rushing yardage of a minus 27 yards and a plus 11 yards passing. Chowan added 21 more points in the third period coming on scores from Isley’s third touchdown, an eight yard run; reserve quarterback Jimmy Fisher’s 21 yard run, and Rodney Anderson’s 10 yard run. The Braves got a fourth quarter score when Lindberg Frazier took the ball.in on the three-yard run. Reserve 'Wild Bunch' Grabs Intramural Crown By KRISTA SCHLEICHER Seventh floor Parker’s “Wild Bunch” offense under the passing at tack of Jeff Pishner (Pish) and the receiving of John Smith and Jeff Pierce rolled to a decisive 24-0 victory over Second floor Mixon “Mixonites”. The “I told you so offense” was tru ly a team orientated attack where by seventh floor marched down the field using a short screen, the wide out and the blocking back flare. Second floor Mixon struggled mostly on defense with good preformances by Mouse Doorman and Charles I.ane who each had seven tackles. Kevin Moyer and Perry Ehle lead the Mixonites offense but with just not enough for the seventh floor’s defense lead by Darrin Hip and Ronnie Bax ter. The Intramural cross country cham pionship was won by James Rod- chester of West Hall. Second floor was won by Tommy Joyner and Weldon Hopps. The girl’s championship was won by Kim Morgan. Seventh floor Parker clearly took the flag football skills winners were Buffey Hip with the punting pass and Tim Felds won the kicking. The next intramural sport to be played is volleyball. Wesley’s only score came with 4:24 left in the game when Curtis McKelvey recovered a blocked punt in the Braves’ end zone. Isley went over 100 yards for second consecutive week with 114 yards on 17 carries and 3 TD’s...quarterback Agee had 7 rushes tor 34 yards and was 5 for 8 in the passing department for 109 yards and 2 TD’s...flanker Banks caught 4 passes for 91 yards and 2 TD’s. Cheer for Chowan 2nd Belk Skins By 3rd Belk By KRISTA SCHLEICHER Second floor Belk under the direc tion of Linda Bridges and the coaching of John Brost rolled on to their second intramural championship defeating 3rd floor Belk 13-12. The championship game truly reflected the improved quality of play in the women’s league. 2nd floor Belk scored first on a long run be Sugar Ray Bridges. The extra point was converted when Bridges threw a short pass to Sonia (Boom Boom out go the lights) Carter. The next touchdown was scored when 3rd floor Belk’s Delisa Mahaley threw a deep pass to Sherry Comer. Comer who has been an outstanding receiver all year long made a diving finger tip catch. Second floor Belk scored again in the 2nd half on another run by Bridges. The extra point was not con verted. 3rd floor Belk scored again, but failed to convert on the extra point leaving the score 13-12. 3rd floor’s ef forts are to be congratulated.
