Personal Welcome To Students
It is good to have you on campus!
You are enrolled in an historic and na
tionally recognized college, and I hope
you will make the most of your stay
here.
Chowan College was founded before
the Civil War, in 1848. This semester,
we begin Chowan’s 136th academic
year, and I join with the faculty an
staff in welcoming you to the campus.
This special ^ition of “Smoke
Signals” has been prepared for you,
particularly for those of you who are
here for the first time. We want you to
know that in every way possible your
faculty and staff are interested in you
and dedicated to helping you achieve
success in your college career. Do not
hesitate to visit with us, talk with us,
or ask whatever questions you might
have. We look forward to getting to
know you.
As you may know, Chowan College,
is an institiution of Christian higher
education related to the Baptist
State Convention of North Carolina.
Our Southern Baptist heritage affects,
to a great extent, the work and
behavior of every member of the col
lege community. North Carolina Bap
tists have loved and supported
Chowan College and helped to make it
one of the top two-year independent
colleges in the nation.
We are glad you are here and hope
you catch the “Chowan spirit” quick
ly. We believe that this special issue of
“Smoke Signals”, along with the Stu
dent Handbook, will assist you to this
end.

Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker
Chowan Is Interested In
Each Student
Throughout a very busy summer, we
have been actively making prepara
tions for a new academic year. It is now
a real pleasure to welcome back on
campus those students who are return
ing to continue their studies at Chowan.
Of course, a special word of welcome
goes to those students who are new to
the campus and who are at the beginn
ing of their college career.
Whether you are a new student or a
returning student, I would assure you
that Chowan College is interested in you
as an individual personality, with in
dividual goals, aspirations, and needs.
Further, it is our desire for each of you
that your eitperience at Chowan will be
one of physical, spiritual, social, and in
tellectual growth. We are concerned for
your total development.
Having said this, however, I would
emphasize that Chowan is first and
foremost an academic institution.
While we want you to have an adequate
amount of time for your social life, for
intramurals, for athletics, for concerts,
and the like, I would encourage you not
to sell yourself short with respect to
your studies. When all is said and done,
your primary purpose for being at this
institution is to achieve an academic
goal, whether it be to acquire those
skills that will prepare you for employ
ment upon completion of your program
of study at Chowan, or whether it is to
complete the first two years of study
leading eventually to the bac
calaureate.
I would mention briefly some of the
provisions made by the college for the
enhancement of your educational ex
perience and, at the same time, I would
urge you to take full advantage of what
has been provided for you.
Our faculty is exceptionally well
qualified, possessing academic creden
tials far in excess of the minimum re
quirements of our accrediting agency,
the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools. All faculty members keep
office hours. These are the students’
hours, times when faculty members
will see you on an individual basis. Fur
ther, each member of the full-time
faculty serves as an academic adviser
to a group of students. You are urged to
attend all scheduled meetings with your
adviser, and also to consult with your
adviser periodically on an individual
basis.
Whitaker Library is a modem, com
fortable facility in which to study and
do research. Early in your academic
career you will want to get acquainted
with it and what it has to offer you. The
library staff is well qualified and eager
to assist you with your needs. Current
ly, the book collection is approximately
Dean Franklin Lowe
75,000 exclusive of microfilm, govern
ment depository items, bound
periodicals, recordings, and the like.
All academic facilities and sup
porting equipment are of good quality
and designed to provide an environ
ment conducive to the educational pro
cess.
While the college has made extensive
provisions for your academic welfare,
to include the expenditure for educa
tional purposes of a far greater portion
of the budget than required by our ac
crediting agency, all of this is teneficial
only to the extent that you, our
