The Braves, before an excited

On a beautiful autumn afternoon
in sun-drenched Garrison Stadium,
Chowan used a strong “Great
Spirit” defense and excellent special
teams play to record the third
shutout of the 1988 season. The
“Great Spirit” held Potomac State
to -5 yards rushing on thirty-five at
tempts, blocked a punt, and a field
goal attempt, recovered two
fumbles, one interception, had seven
quarterback sacks, and allowed only
a hundred and sixteen yards total of
fense.
Not only did the defense shutout
the Catamounts, but also scored
twelve points and set up the offense
for thirteen more points. Sophomore
All-American candidate, George
Koonce, got things started by sack
ing the Potomac State quarterback
causing a fumble which tackle Andy
Williams recovered. Quarterback
Gary Campbell hit tight end Craig
Thomas with a twenty-one yard scor
ing strike and a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, defensive
end Tim Canada blocked a Cata
mount punt, picked up the ball and
ran thirty yards for his first college
touchdown. One minute later, cor-
nerback Andra Smith intercepted a
Potomac State aerial and raced
thirty-six yards for the next Braves
score and a 19-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, defensive end
Mark Kenney recovered a fumbled
punt return to set up Mike Brown’s
forty-four yard field goal. Brown
added a forty-one yard field goal
later in the third quarter to close out
the scoring.
The Braves was lead by All-
American candidate Koonce who
had five solo tackles and eight

ble. End Barry Groff had six solo's

Most Inspiring Teacher
and Honor Student Day
On November 12,1988 Chowan
College is going to try something
new. They have asked their return
ing Honor Students to pick an
outstanding educator from their past
to attend Most Inspiring Teacher
and Honor Student Day. These
teachers are to be honored for their
remarkable contributions they pass
ed on to the Honor Students.
Cornell University first came up
with the idea of honoring outstan
ding teachers. They agreed that
these outstanding teachers did not
get the recognition they deserved.
They decided to ask the students to
pick the teacher they thought con
tributed the most to their students.
The honoring of teachers went very
well, and soon spread to other
schools.
A faculty member here at Chowan
read an article about this honoring
of exceptional teachers, and brought
it to the attention of Dean Lewis.
Dean Lewis, seeing how true the ar
ticle was, that outstanding teachers
are rarely recognized, came up with
a very unique idea. He wanted
Chowan College to have an Honors
Day. So he went and talked with the
Honor Students, and they both
agreed that it was a good idea. The
special day of honoring outstanding
teachers was altered to fit the needs
of Chowan College.
Though it has never been done at
this college before Dean Lewis feels
very confident that it will succeed.
This is another step forward for
Chowan College, and hopefully it
will work out.
