The Chowan Dancers
Preparing for
Spring shows

The Chowan College dancers are
preparing for their Spring semester
line up of shows, under the direction
of Mrs. Marla Mannings.
The beginning class, which consists
of Cindi Browning, Tracy Francis,
Susan Harmon, Julie Mottle, Angela
Jones, Meather Smith, Luisa Urea,
Sheila White, Christie Denson,
Glenda Mam, Chikako Oburi, Yayoi
Takedo, Melodie Rurssee, Curtis
Knight, and Keshia Lynch are learning
all the basic moves and positions that
they will need to leam their dances.
They will soon start on last semester’s
version of the “Buffalo Stance”, and
if time allows, they will also make up
one of their own.
The intermediate and advanced
classes are working together on the
“Cold Hearted Snake” and “The
Rythmn Is Gonna Get You” as well
as another surprise dance. The ad
vanced guys have a few dances that
they have been working very hard on
and have choreographed themselves.
These advanced students are. Angel
Ramos, Will Rice, Preston Gist, Stacy
Barber, Farante Parker, Denita Baker,
Diane Dean, Debbie Dorrough,
Michelle Saunders, Jason Edwards,
Chieko Ukita, Susan Wilkins, Jennifer
Allen, Hollie Bradley, Jill Overton,
and Julie Brooks.
Some performances the groups have
planned starting in late February are at
South Hampton Middle and High
Schools, a few at various schools in
the Hertford County, NC area, and
one fmal show here at Chowan in late
April or early May. Each group will
be doing two to four dances and solo
performances will be by Evette Baker,
Julie Brooks, Jennifer Allen, and
Susan Wilkins.
Mrs. Hunnings is very pleased with
the turn out for the classes this
semester and the enthusiasm in the
classes. She is expecting a productive
and successful spring.
SGA to hold elections
March 19, 20, 21

Student Government Association
(SGA) elections will be held March
19, 20, 21. Voting will take place in
Thomas Cafeteria during lunch and
supper. Anyone who is interested in
running for one of the nine positions
should contact Elizabeth Genshaw, the
Director of Student Activities, or John
Davis, the faculty advisor for SGA
during their office hours. One may fill
out an application which must be
turned in by March 1 to Mrs. Genshaw
or Dr. Davis.
Presently, Jimmy Mobbs is the
President of SGA, while Ken Traino
holds the position of Vice-President.
DeeDee Babb serves as
Secretary/Treasurer. Persons who
hold offices in the Executive Board are
Wendy Holland, Paul Conway, David
Coates, Frances Rudd, Michelle
Shlage, and Cindy Council. Lastly,
the Legislative Branch consists of the
entire student body.
Mrs. Genshaw feels that all students
should take advantage of having a say
in their student government. She says,
“The SGA is a place where students at
Chowan can speak their mind and
make a difference if they are not
satisfied about an aspect of the
college. However, no changes or
progrevi can be mad« if the students
do not become involved. ’ ’
Prospective applicants for positions
in the SGA executive or legislative
branch must have attended Chowan
College for at least one semester prior
to running for that office. One must
also have a cumulative 2.0 grade point
average.

Student Center and will be held on the

Spring musical
tryouts tonight, 6:30
“Your’re a Good Man, Charlie
Brown” will be the spring musical
production of the Chowan College
Fine Arts Department. The loveable
characters from the “Peanuts” comic
strip will come to life on the Turner
stage March 27-31.
Auditions for the show are being
held tonight, February 1 at 6:30 pm in
Turner Auditorium. Anyone interested
in working on this show is encouragea

There is a new organization on the
Chowan campus. They are called the
ACES. ACES stands for Achieving
Chowan Excellence through Service.
The advisors for this new organization
are Mr. Winslow Carter and Mr. Sven
VanBaars. The members of this
association were recommended by
faculty and staff members at Chowan
College. This years officers are,
president- Brad Wilson, Vice-
President- Jennifer Shepard,
Secretary- Jamie Cox, and Tour
Coordinator- Shannon Worley. The
purpose of the club is to represent
Chowan College through service to
the school. They conduct tours for
visiting prospects, they help out
Dean Bruce Moore, proved to us that he is the Dean of Dtudents by helping a couple of Chowan's Japanese students.
Bruce Moore named new
Chowan dean of students
to come out and lend support. Eight
roles will be filled by actors/singers.
Many more backstage roles will be
available. Backstage positions open
include properties, costumes, lighting,
set change and house management.
If you’re in need of some ex
tracurricular activity to add some fun
to your life, try joining the activities of
the Chowan Players. Come and join
tonight at 6:30 in Turner.
Bruce Moore, formerly adult
associate in the Discipleship Training
Department of the Baptist State Con
vention of North Carolina in Cary, has
been named dean of students at
Chowan College effective January 15,
according to President Jerry F.
Jackson.
Moore, a Fayetteville native, is a
graduate of Campbell University and
Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary. He has served in various
church positions at Temple Baptist
Church, Memphis, Tennessee; Hayes
Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh; and
First Baptist Church in Richmond,
Virginia.
He was also director of religious ac
tivities and international student ad
visor at Campbell University. He has
served in many volunteer leadership
positions for Baptists on the local,
state and national levels.
Among his professional ex
periences, Moore served as supervisor
in the Supervised Ministry Program of
Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary. He has been a leader for
college, single adult, and marriage
enrichment conferences in North
Carolina and Virginia and at National
Baptist Conference centers.
Moore initiated, planned and direc
ted major mission efforts by college
student teams to Baltimore, Maryland;
Orlando, Florida; Espanola, New
Mexico; and Brooklyn and Manhattan,
New York.
He and his wife, Brenda, have a
daughter, Jennifer, 16, and a son,
Michael, 12.
Moore will be directly responsible
to the college’s president. He will
supervise the areas of Financial Plan
ning and Student Aid, Counseling and
Career Development, Student Ac
tivities, Health Services, Summer
Programs, and Residence Life.
The former dean of students,
Clayton Lewis, has accepted a new
position at Chowan, director of cor
porate and foundation relations and
prospect research in the Department of
Development.
Lewis served as a school principal
for 13 years including three years at
North Stanley High School in New
London. He previously taught junior
high school. He became Chowan’s fir
st dean of students in 1968.
He is a veteran of the U.S. Army,
where he was involved with
psychological warfare.
A graduate of Wake Forest Univer
sity, he received his master’s degree
from East Carolina University and
completed further studies at the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, Western Carolina
University and Appalachian State
University.
He is married to the former Alice
Banks of Chester, S.C., a public
school teacher. Their son, Hugh, is a
Chowan graduate with two associate
degrees.
Lisa Newsome: director of college relations
ACES: a new student
service organization
during preview days, and work with
the annual Phone-a-thon. The Phone-
a-thon lasts over a period of three
weeks, during which the students
gather together in a room full of
phones and call alumni requesting
donations to the school. On February
22-25, four members of the ACES
will travel to Carson-Newman College
in Jefferson City, Tennessee for a
national convention. They will be
meeting with other schools with
similar organizations. The members
for next year will be rising
sophomores chosen by the current
members that will properly represent
Chowan College. The work of the
ACES should definately be comm-
mended.
Lisa Newsome has been named
director of college relations at Chowan
College effective Jan. 15, according to
President Jerry F. Jackson.
Mrs. Newsome comes to Chowan
from the Roanoke-Chowan Human
Services Center, where she served
since May, 1977 as information and
communications specialist II. In this
position, she was coordinator of all
education, consultation and prevention
activities at the center, including
public relations, grant writing,
writing, editing the quarterly
newsletter.
She was also responible for annual
reports, speeches, brochures, and
annual slide/tape presentations.
Newsome was also involved in public
speaking to groups on stress
management, assertiveness training,
and alcohol and drug education.
She is a 1975 summa cum laude
graduate of Chowan College and
received the A.B. in English/Jour
nalism from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. She graduated
cum laude in English with honors.
Lisa Newsome is a charter member
of the National Council of Community
Health Centers Prevention Division.
She has served in a number of
positions including president of the
National Association of Mental Health
Information Officers. She was named
Eastern North Carolina’s Outstanding
Citizen in 1988.
Newsome is a member of the
Chowan College Alumni Board;
founding board member of the
Roanoke-Chowan Services for Abused
Families; advisor/member of the
Eastern Area Health Education
Committee; and member and ruling
elder of the Ahoskie First Presbyterian
Church, where she is president of
Presbyterian Women.
She has served as a member of the
North Carolina Jaycettes and Ahoskie
chapter president; member of the
North Carolina Council on the Status
of Women; and Roanoke-Chowan
Hospice Advisory Committee.
She has received numerous
professional awards. On the area
level, she was chosen the 1984
Roanoke-Chowan Human Services
Center Staff Member of the Year.
For the past two years, she has been
named Accredited Mental Health
Communicator by the National
Association of Mental Health In
formation Officers. She previously
became accredited upon completion of
an oral examination by a panel of three
accredited officers of the Association,
She has received numerous Media
Awards in many categories from the
National Association of Mental Health
Information Centers.

national first place awards in 1981
(newsletter), 1982 (annual report),
1984 (slide/tape presentation), 1985
(brochure), and 1989 (annual report).
Newsome has also received a number
of regional Media Awards.
A Charlotte native, she and her
husband, John, have two children,
Holli Brown, 8, and James Edward, 4.
The former director of college
relations, Phil Royce, has assumed a
new position at Chowan, director of
service enterprise.
Service Enterprises, part of the
Business Office, coordinates all
campus mass mailings and is
responsible for student mall services in
Lakeside Student Center. Royce will
also serve as advisor to the student
newspaper.
Fellowship of
Christian Athletes
chapter formed

The Fellowship of Christian
Athletes is a new organization starting
this semester. Their meeting time is
Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m. in the
Lakeside Student Center TV room.
Come and join F.C.A.! It is open to
both athletes and non-athletes. Enjoy
good fellowship in a Christian Spirit.
