CHOWAN
SPORTS UPDATE

Braves’ Football
The Chowan Braves ended the 1989
football season dropping their final
three games to finish 6-4. Saturday,
October 28, nationally ranked Nassau
Community College visited Garrison
Stadium, handing the Braves a 41-14
loss. Chowan’s only touchdowns were
scored by Eric Bates on a 63-yard run
and Barryl Boulware on a 70-yard pass
reception from Jimmy Shropshire.
The Knights of Montgomery
College came into the Braves’ den the
following Saturday, dominating the
game en route to a 28-7 victory. The
Braves, who had been averaging 28
points per game, found their offense
sputtermg all day long. Poor field
position, penalties and turnovers were
the story as Chowan could only
generate 85 total yards while picking
up five first downs. Montgomery, who
enjoyed exellent field position the
better part of the day, rolled up 324
total yards. The Braves' only
touchdown came in the second quarter
as Montgomery was attempting a field
goal from Chowan's 20-yard line.
Defensive tackle Robert Samples
broke through the Ime of scrimmage
and blocked the attempt. All-
American candidate Steve Smith
picked up the loose pigskin and
scampered 80 yards for the Braves
touchdown. Chuck Komegay split the
uprights giving Chowan its only lead
of the day.
Greenville, S.C. was the site for the
Braves’ final game of the season. The
nationally ranked Tigers of North
Greenville College Jumped to an early
14-0 lead and never looked back en
route to a 49-20 victory. The Braves
mounted a comeback in the second
half, going to the air-waves behind the
strong arm of sophomore quarterback
Jimmy Shropshire. Shropshire
hooked-up with Marlek Connor and
Kevin Johnson for touchdowns
covering 24 and 27 yards. Johnson
caught two touchdown passess, the
first coming on a 19-yard pass from
halfback Anthony Barnes in the
second quarter.
Chowan concluded it year with a 6-4
overall record and 1-3 in the Coastal
Conference. Jim Garrison concluded
his 32nd year as head coach, achieving
for the 26th time a winning season.
Garrison’s overall record is 177-132-
12.
Ladies Volleyball
The Lady Braves Concluded their
regular season the weekend of October
27th and 28th by defeating Catonsville
Community College and Region X
opponents Spartanburg Methodist and
North Greenville. Friday night the
Lady Braves defeated Catonsville
Community College 15-13, 5-6 and
Region X opponents Spartanburg
Methodist in a tough five game match
12-15, 15-11, 15-8, 14-16 and 15-2.
Saturday morning Anne Arundel
Community College fell victim to the
Lady Braves 13-15, 15-7 and 15-6.
Chowan capped its regular season
defeating North Greenville College
15-7,15-1,15-9 to finish the regular
season 28-11.
The weekend of November 3rd and
4th found the ladies in Anderson, S.C.
for the Region X tournament. Seeded
number three, the Lady Braves put
together two consecutive days of
excellent volleyball to win the Region
X championship. The Braves defeated
the host team, Anderson College, 15-
6, 15-2 in the title game. The Lady
Braves selected to the All-Tournament
were Sue Taylor (Staunton, VA),
Jennifer Towell (Springfield, VA) and
Cartrina Williams (Bradenton, FL),
Williams was also named the Most
Valuable Player for the tournament.
The post season honors continued as
Towell, Taylor, and Williams were
selected to the Region X team.
By virtue of their Region X
championship, the Lady Braves
traveled to Bay-Minette, Alabama the
weekend of November 10 and 11 to
play Faulkner Junior College in the
opening round of the NJCAA tour
nament. Head Coach Janet Collins’
program served notice quickly that it
would be the dominant team, defeating
Faulkner In two straight matched 15-6,
16-14; 15-7, 16-14 to capture the
District Nine Championship. Named
to the All-Tournament team were
Fonda Lyons (Raleigh, NC), Sue
Taylor (Staunton, VA), and Cartrina
Williams (Bradenton,FL). Williams,
for the second consecutive tour
nament, was named Most Valuable
Player.
The next stop for the Lady Braves
was Miami, Florida, site of the
National Volleyball Tournament the
weekend of November 20 through 22.
The Lady Braves, who have been to
the nationals three out of the last five
years, were seeded number four in
their pool, in the four pool tournament
consisting of the best sixteen teams in
the nation. Chowan began their quest
for the national championship taking
on host school Miami Dade Com
munity College South, dropping three
straight games 15-4, 15-3 and 15-3.
The Lady Jaguars of Miami Dade
eventually won the national cham
pionship defeating Barton County
Community College of Kansas in three
straight games.
The Lady Braves' second match was
against defending national champion
Schoolcraft College from Michigan
The Ocelots from Michigan defeated
Chowan 15-1, 15-1, 15-3 to eliminate
the Lady Braves' chances of winning
their pool.
Chowan's final match of the season
found them pitted against Hagerstown
College, who was also winless going
into the last games for the opening
round. Chowan put together three
consistent games to defeat Hagerstown
15-10, 15-6, 15-11 for the first time in
two previous encounters this year. The
Lady Braves finished third in their
pool with a 3-6 record, their best
showing in the National Tournament.
Overall, Chowan finished 35-13 for
the season and tied for twelfth in the
nation, capping another excellent
season for Janet Collins and her Lady
Braves volleyball team.
Men’s Basketball
The Chowan Braves men’s
basketball team opened its season on a
winning note Tuesday, November
24th, blasting Pitt Community College
116-36. Chowan was led by freshman
Tim Davis (Richmond, VA) with 29
points and seven rebounds.
Monday, November 2(Xh, Chowan
suffered its first loss of the season
when Columbia Junior College upset
the Braves 61-59 at Jesse Helms
Center. Phil Wood (Washington,
D.C.)led Chowan with 21 points.
Head Coach Bob Burke regrouped
his forces and saw his team finish third
in the prestigious Pepsi-Cola National
Invitational Tournament held in
Ocala, Florida November 23rd
through the 25th. The Braves defeated
the second ranked junior college team
in Florida, Palm Beach Community
College, 77-68, on Thursday night.
The top point-producer was freshman
Tim Davis who pumped in 19 points.
Friday night in the semi-finals,
Chowan played the host school.
Central Florida, dropping a tough 87-
70 decision. Saturday night in the
consolation round for third place, the
running Braves defeated the number
two ranked team in Texas junior
college basketball. Trinity Valley, 81-
71. Five Braves were in double figures
led by freshman Ken Scroggins
(Woodbridge, VA) with 16 points.
With the Christmas holidays quickly
approaching, the Braves face some
tough competition with two games to
be played at the Helms Center.
Tuesday, November 28th, the Braves
will be in Charlottesville, VA where
they will face the University of
Virginia junior Varsity squad.
Chowan will stay on the road facing
Region X opponents Spartanburg
Methodist College and Anderson
