On October 21, nineteen Puerto
Ricans visited the North Carolina School
of the Arts as part of a one month seminar
^isi'-stion to the U.S. The director of
education, educational supervisors, super
intendents, teachers, principals, and
college professors were among the group
whose aim was to gain new concepts in the
educational field. The seminar which they
constitute will continue for six months,
during which time their jobs are being
filled by temporary personnel. The study
is financed by the federal government
and the Puerto Rican commonwealths.
Dr. Awilda Aponte, director of
the seminar, and her group have visited
schools in Florida and North Carolina.
After their visit at NCSA, they planned
to visit schools in Raleigh and Chapel
Hill.
Given a tour of the campus by
Mr. Bruce Stewart, Mr. Jesus Silva, and
Javier Calderon, the visitors were able
to observe the orchestra in rehearsal and
dancers in classes. In the drama depart
ment, an impromptu speech from Camino
Real, was given by Kurt Yaghjian, after-
which, Steve Hewitt explained the theatre.
There is no Puerto Rican counter
part to the N.C. School of the Arts. Dr,
Aponte did; however, mention that there
were public music schools which provide
scad^mxc courses in conjunction with
music study. These schools are state
maintained but are not boarding insti
tutions. The University of Puerto Rico
h4s an arts department, and there ig
also a Music Conservatory from which
many students graduate and come to the

SCHOOL FILMED
FOR TV PROGRAM
The camera crew that invaded your
classrooms and studios on Wednesday and
Thursday of this week were from Station
WRALr-TV in Raleigh.
The members of the crew are putting
together a half-hour, sound-on-film story
of the North Carolina School of the Arts
that will be broadcast later over WRAL.
The station will also make the film avail
able to other television stations through
out the state.
The idea for the film came from
Mr. A.J. Fletcher, head of WRAL and a
trustee of the School of the Arts. It
Will be the first of two which the station
will produce,
The second will consist mostly of
student performances, and will be taped
live on Saturday, November 19, at the WRAL
theatre in Raleigh before an invited
audience. This well mark the kick-off of
the School's fund drive in the Raleigh
area.
