Vol.- 1, No. 11 North Carolina School of the Arts February 1 7 STUDENTS PERFORM TONIGHT 1 NEW TECHNICAL CL/« UNDERWAY A new technical theater class for the college drama students is now in operation for the second semester. Un der the direction of Mr. Edward Kene- strick and Mr. T.C. Behrens, the soph omores and juniors meet in class on Tuesday and the freshmen on Thursday. The purpose of these new hour long classes is to stress the more specific points of techinical theater. Teaching the student every aspect of the "behind the scenes” operation is the objective of the course. The dif ferent parts of the various lighting instruments and a good knowledge of the workings of a stage floor plan are among the many topics to be dealt with through the year. The classes are small and therefore much more is ac complished for and by the individual student. It is hoped that through these classes the actors will broaden their theater sense with a clearer knowledge of the stage on which they work. FACULTY TO PERFORM On Friday, February 24, a faculty concert will feature Philip Dunigan, flute; Stephen Adelstein, oboe; Howard Aibel, piano; and Marc Gottlieb, vio lin; Scott Nickrenz, viola; and Irving Klein, cello, members of the Claremont String Quartet. Two Mozart quartets, ”D major K285 for flute and strings” and ”F (con’t on page 3) Brahms, Beethoven, Bozza, and Hindemith will be the composers featured in the student recital Friday at 8:15 p.m. in the auditor ium. Dan Ashe, Marsha Pobanz, and Ida Biehler will perform the Brahms’ "Horn Trio, no. 2, op. 40”. Beetho ven's ”0p. 1, no. 3 in C minor” will feature Margaret Tait, Bruce Moss, and Ida Biehler. Sandra Miller, Rebecca Troxler, Christine Nield, and Ransom Wilson will play the Bozza flute quartet ”Jous d'ete ^ la Montagne.” ”Kanonische Sona- tine” by Hindemith will also feature Sandra Miller and Ransom Wilson. The program will also include Ina Conant, soprano. Mrs. Conant is a student of Rose Bampton. She will sing ”Dove Sono” from Mozart's Mar riage of Figaro, and ”Mimi's Addio” from Puccini's La Boheme, GOV 28 M RNOR ALLOTS ON NCSA Governor Dan Moore in his bud get message Monday, February 12, recommended $2.8 million in opera ting expenses and $1,275,000 for new buildings for the North Carolina School of the Arts. The operating expense budget includes $298,000 for new or expand ed instructional programs and $88,376 for two eight-week summer school programs. William Herring, adminis trative director of the school said, ”This budget requires a lot of care ful attention before I can discuss it further. We at the school have not had a chance to study the budget thoroughly. And we must remember that this is only proposed. The state legislature has to act.” Among the improvements listed are steam baths. ”We need these fa cilities for the relief of muscular tension for the dancers...” Herring said. These baths will be part of a proposed new building for dining physical education, guest, study and social facilities at a cost of $760,000. (con’t. on page 3)
