STUDENTS PERFORM TONIGHT
1
NEW TECHNICAL CL/«
UNDERWAY
A new technical theater class for
the college drama students is now in
operation for the second semester. Un
der the direction of Mr. Edward Kene-
strick and Mr. T.C. Behrens, the soph
omores and juniors meet in class on
Tuesday and the freshmen on Thursday.
The purpose of these new hour
long classes is to stress the more
specific points of techinical theater.
Teaching the student every aspect of
the "behind the scenes” operation is
the objective of the course. The dif
ferent parts of the various lighting
instruments and a good knowledge of
the workings of a stage floor plan are
among the many topics to be dealt with
through the year. The classes are
small and therefore much more is ac
complished for and by the individual
student. It is hoped that through
these classes the actors will broaden
their theater sense with a clearer
knowledge of the stage on which they
work.

Governor Dan Moore in his bud
get message Monday, February 12,
recommended $2.8 million in opera
ting expenses and $1,275,000 for new
buildings for the North Carolina
School of the Arts.
The operating expense budget
includes $298,000 for new or expand
ed instructional programs and $88,376
for two eight-week summer school
programs. William Herring, adminis
trative director of the school said,
”This budget requires a lot of care
ful attention before I can discuss
it further. We at the school have
not had a chance to study the budget
thoroughly. And we must remember
that this is only proposed. The state
legislature has to act.”
Among the improvements listed
are steam baths. ”We need these fa
cilities for the relief of muscular
tension for the dancers...” Herring
said. These baths will be part of
a proposed new building for dining
physical education, guest, study and
social facilities at a cost of
$760,000.
