SHE STOOPS V/INS RECOG
The NCSA Theatre Department's
production of Oliver Goldsmith's SHE
STOOPS TO CONQUER has been selected
as a finalist in the Anierican Col
lege Theatre Festival's national
competition to select ten outstand
ing college productions to perform
in Washington, D.C. this spring. She
SLoops To Conquer'j which was direct
ed by Dolores Ferraro, Associate Di
rector of the Theatre Department,
was performed by NCSA last November.
Mr. Robert Kase, National Coordinat
or of the Festival, states in a let
ter to Ira Zuckerman, Dean of the
Theatre Department: "your regional
selection reflects honor on your
college for its contribution to the
American Theatre."
Over 200 colleges throughout
the U. S. entered productions in the
American College Theatre Festival,
which is the first drama competition
of its kind in this country. Thir
teen regional committees screened
the productions during the fall of
1968. A Central Committee in Wash
ington will review the thirty re
gional winners and select ten pro
ductions for the 1969 Washington
program, which will be presented be
tween April 27 and May 11 in the
historic Ford's Theatre and in a new
theatre provided by the Smithsonian
Institution. Each of the companies
will stage its chosen production
three times and spend a total of six
days in Washington.
The Festival is sponsored by
American Airlines, the Friends of
The John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, and the Smithson
ian Institution. Each of the com
panies will stage its chosen pro
duction three times and spend a to
tal of six days in Washington.
The Festival was organized to
give national recognition to the
high quality of college and univer
sity theatre productions, promote
more public interest in theatre and
form an important bridge for talent
ed young artists between college
theatre and the professional stage.
In addition, the festival will
serve as a pilot project for a type
of program to be considered for de
velopment by the John F. Kennedy Cen
ter for the Performing Arts aimed at
stimulating greater creative activity
and appreciation of the arts by all
Americans. Roger Stevens, chairman
of the National Council on the Arts
and Chairman of the Board of Trustees
of the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Perfotming Arts, has appointed the
Friends of the John F. Kennedy Center
as project representative for the
college festival.
During the run at NCSA, She
Stoops To Conquer broke all previous
drama department attendance records.
A total of 3,270 saw the production
during the eleven performances. Stu
dents comprised 1,773 of this audi
ence. Several high school and col
lege groups traveled almost 200 miles
to see the production and to visit
the school.
Walls are in every life.
Stones - prisons - strong and
cold.
A mind - ideas - stroaler, but warm.
Beautiful, Adrift and Free.
Few quickly vanish
crossing a barricade,
most slowly expire
confined in desolation.
