Essay Page 4 SHE STOOPS V/INS RECOG The NCSA Theatre Department's production of Oliver Goldsmith's SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER has been selected as a finalist in the Anierican Col lege Theatre Festival's national competition to select ten outstand ing college productions to perform in Washington, D.C. this spring. She SLoops To Conquer'j which was direct ed by Dolores Ferraro, Associate Di rector of the Theatre Department, was performed by NCSA last November. Mr. Robert Kase, National Coordinat or of the Festival, states in a let ter to Ira Zuckerman, Dean of the Theatre Department: "your regional selection reflects honor on your college for its contribution to the American Theatre." Over 200 colleges throughout the U. S. entered productions in the American College Theatre Festival, which is the first drama competition of its kind in this country. Thir teen regional committees screened the productions during the fall of 1968. A Central Committee in Wash ington will review the thirty re gional winners and select ten pro ductions for the 1969 Washington program, which will be presented be tween April 27 and May 11 in the historic Ford's Theatre and in a new theatre provided by the Smithsonian Institution. Each of the companies will stage its chosen production three times and spend a total of six days in Washington. The Festival is sponsored by American Airlines, the Friends of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Smithson ian Institution. Each of the com panies will stage its chosen pro duction three times and spend a to tal of six days in Washington. The Festival was organized to give national recognition to the high quality of college and univer sity theatre productions, promote more public interest in theatre and form an important bridge for talent ed young artists between college theatre and the professional stage. In addition, the festival will serve as a pilot project for a type of program to be considered for de velopment by the John F. Kennedy Cen ter for the Performing Arts aimed at stimulating greater creative activity and appreciation of the arts by all Americans. Roger Stevens, chairman of the National Council on the Arts and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Perfotming Arts, has appointed the Friends of the John F. Kennedy Center as project representative for the college festival. During the run at NCSA, She Stoops To Conquer broke all previous drama department attendance records. A total of 3,270 saw the production during the eleven performances. Stu dents comprised 1,773 of this audi ence. Several high school and col lege groups traveled almost 200 miles to see the production and to visit the school. Walls are in every life. Stones - prisons - strong and cold.
