They are Bran- deis University, Waltham, Mass., THE CRIMINALS; Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va., THE ADDING MACHINE, Hofstra University, Garden City, N. Y., RASHOMON; Los Angles City College, Calif., THE WAY OF THE WORLD; North Carolina School of the Arts, Winston-Salim, SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER: Pennsylvania State Univer sity, University Park, THE MISER: University of Oklahoma, Norman, LYSISTRATA; University of Texas at Austin, AN ENIMY OF THE PEOPLE: University of Washington, Seattle, VOLPONE; and Wayne State University Detroit, Michigan, A FLEA IN HER EAR. Three alternate colleges have been selected in the event that any of the ten finalist companies is unable to take part in the Festi val. They are Ohio University, Athens, for its production BARBARA, and the University of Arizona, MIS ALLIANCE. The 15-day Festival will open April 28 at the restored Ford's Theatre being erected by the Smith sonian Institution. Each theatre will house five of the ten product ions. Each company will stay in Washington for six days to present three consecutive performances, at tend seminars on the American thea tre at the Smithsonian and to see other Festival plays. All expens es will be paid by the Festival. One hundred and seventy-six colleges were entered in this first nationwide Festival. Thirteen re gional committees screened the pro ductions and made recommendations to the Festival's Central Commit tee. Sponsors of:'the first American College Theatre Festival are Ameri can Airlines, The Friends of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Per forming Arts and the Smithsonian Institution. Producing the Festi val are the American Educational Theatre Association (AETA) and ANTA, which have organized and executed the selection process un der the direction of C. Robert Kase. Dr. Kase is National Coordinator and co-chairman of the Festival with Miss Wood. The Smithsonian Institution is managing the Washington productions and providing the two theatres as well as facilities for the semi nars . The Friends of the Kennedy Center are providing administrative support for the selection commit tees and are arranging housing and hospitality for the drama companies while in Washington. Planning for the American Col lege Theatre Festival began in 1964, when a pilot program was launched by ANTA, AETA and the Ken nedy Center.
