March 17, 1969 The N. C. Essay Student Voices And Views Page 2 by Mca'sha Pobanz and Cindy -Vinklev GALA PREMIERE FIRST OF ITS KIND On Wednesday, March 5th, the Teeny Boppers of Winston-Salem turn ed out for the gala premiere of Rom eo and Juliet staged at Parkway The ater. The premiere desperately at tempted to resemble that of Holly wood, with its white dinner jackets and floor length formals, but fell short of its aim. The event was sponsored by WTOB for the Forsyth County Youth Council and proceeds were used to support the day camp for the mentally and physically handicapped. A MOTLEY CREW A motley crew of curiosity seekers from N.C.S.A. were also pre sent for the occasion attired in their distinguished bell-bottoms and the latest in pigtail coiffures. A band of juveniles, future rock stars of America, bombarded the crowd as they waited outside their "Hollywood Palace" for the proceedings to com mence. Several beauty queens, the ater officials, and VIP's received the red carpet treatment as the bea con spotlight marking the "happen ing" flashed with regal announcement into the night. Soon the crowd began to con verge on the opening doors; then the angelic ushers and sugary sweet ush erettes greeted everyone with the repetitious drone of "Hope y'all have an enjoyable evenin'." Once inside, one had free run of the place, gluttonously making a bee- line for the varied trays of hors d'oeuvres, consisting of tuna and pimento cheese, decrusted finger sandwiches, along with pickles, o- lives, and sausage tidbits, notto mention the free coke. A lavish layout for the Winston-Salemites. Introducing Troy Shondell, rock star from Nashville, and a more sea soned group of noise makers known as the "Novice Nine," was the Flying Dutchman from WTOB assisted by his "Good Guys." Once again it was proven that amplification can leave one partially unsensed, that iis, deaf. It was really amazing that anyone had any hearing apparatus left at all by the time the movie was finally projected. Craniero were moved to exhibit some extemporaneous gyrations in respons es to the inescapable throb resound ing from the stage. Next on the agenda was a fash ion show presented by "Mother and Daughter Department Store," and nar rated by Miss Susan Rothrock, Miss Teenage Winston-Salem. The models, displaying their deformed bodies modelled fashions resembling "Good Will Specials." The models really defy description. They proved how effective push up bras can be and also how a Mother and Daughter charm course can help one develop the ul timate in poise and grace needed to trip across the stage in spiked heels. Susie Rothrock highlighted the evening with the dramatic mon6- tone reading of her cue cards as she welcomed the audience to the remini scent of a "Discount House" fashion show. Another thrill of the evening that just made the night for the N.C.S.A. students was the privilege of having their picture taken with Miss Rothrock and a former 11183 Teenage Charlotte of Charlotte, North Carolina.
