Thursday
On wings of purple satin
in the twilight of your mind
gentle in the hush of slumber
watching through the careless realm of fantasy
you reached
and embraced your dreams with a smile
As the seasons spun their pattern
on the spinning-wheel of time
we silhouettes in morning's shadow
scattered vows, milk-mouthed, toward the wind
How strange
that the sea soughed to mock us
[Did we think to grasp the sky?
Or even taste it with quivering fingertips?
For we could only trace the horizon]
Your hair a storm of amber
'gainst the cool of morning's tears
Unlace from mine your fingers
—they kiss your dizzy tambourine
For we've only a song's tread yet to go

controversial figure, DeGaulle rous
ed the ire of Americans by his re
pudiation of our economic and mili
tary support. As Americans, we
could critize this lack of respect
for our power, but at the same time
respect him for the confidence and
strength he has injected into the
sagging French pride and economy.
It seems likely that if France
does not get along well with our his
guidance, DeGaulle would once again
come out of retirement, to head the
French Governmentj
