No. 15 North Carolina School of the Arts Feb. 2. 1970 Sanders Directs X'ti^toire / STUDENT ENROLLMENT 25 Students Withdrew 1st Semester 16 Students Enrolled 1 st Semester ACCREDITATION The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has notified the North Carolina School of the Arts that Dr. Jameson Jones, Vice Presi dent and Dean of the College at Southwestern at Memphis has been named Chairman of the Evaluation Committee which will visit our cam pus on April 19-22. It is expected that Dr. Jones will make a preliminary visit to NCSA in February. PHOTO BY S.J.B. Drama School To Graduate Three In June Here are three familiar faces at NCSA. Pictured above are (L to R) Randall Rickman, David Wood, and David Sutor, who will receive their B.F.A. degrees in Drama this June. This is David Sutor's fourth year here at NCSA, while David Wood and Randall Rickman came to the school when it opened five years ago. Each have been in over twenty-five produc tions since entering the school. David Wood and Randall Rickman are from North Carolina, while David Sutor hails from Virginia. After gradua tion Wood and Sutor both plan to head west with aspirations of entering the television and film industry, while Rickman hopes to either go on for his Masters Degree at Wayne State Univer sity in Detroit, Michigan, or to per form as a journeyman with one of America's leading repertory companies. The N.C. Essay staff would Xike to wish all three prospective gradu ates continued success and the best of luck and fortune in their futures. NEXT WEEK; The N.C. New Policy Set For Convocations The Administrative Committee of the School has approved the estab lishment of a Convocations Committee and a new policy regarding the con vocation programs. The new Committee consists of faculty and student representatives. Dr. William Baskin-, Assistant Academ ic Dean, will serve as Chairman of the Committee. Other faculty repre sentatives include Dean Hyatt, Mr. Clifton Matthews and Mr. Dirk Daw son of the Public Relations Office. Student representatives will be Lunda (Cont on page 4) L'histoire du soldat (The Sotd- iev's Tale)3 by Igor Stravinsky, has been scheduled to be performed by students from NCSA this coming March 11. L'histoire du soldat (to be read, played and danced) will be di rected by Job Sanders from the De partment of Dance. The production will feature students from the De partments of Dance, Music and Drama. Rick McCullough will dance, and act the part of the soldier. Sam Barce lona will handle the lengthy and diff icult role of the Narrator, which also includes being a prop man and scenery arranger. Svea Ecklof will dance the role of the Princess. Odd ly enough, Miss Eklof has only one line in the entire show. David Wood will act and dance the part of the Devil, which necessitates him appear ing as a butterfly catcher, a woman, and a virtuoso violinist, as well. The musicians have not been named at this time, but the instruments needed are: violin, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, double-bass and per cussion. This will be Mr. Sanders' first attempt at directing a produc tion with spoken dialogue. As of now, L’histoire du soldat is sche duled to be performed in the school's auditorium. L’histoire du soldat was first presented in September of 1918 (fifty-two years ago). SEE PHOTOGRAPHS ON PAGE 3 Marjorie Mitchell To Perform Friday Concert pianist Marjorie Mit chell will present a faculty recital at 8:15 p.m. Friday, February 6, in the main auditorium at the North Carolina School of the Arts. The concert will be open to the public without charge. Miss Mitchell has been on the faculty at the School of the Arts since September, 1968. She was solo ist with the Winston-Salem Symphony in a concert here at Reynolds Audi torium last February. Miss Mitchell has been playing recitals and orchestral concerts in Europe and America since 1953. She has been a regular performer on BBC and in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Zur ich with radio symphony orchestras. (Cont. on page 4) y
