Vd.4.No. 30 North Carolina School of the Arts May 27.1970 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON TO THE 1970 GRADUiffllHG CLASS NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OP THE ARTS You gradmte at a tine >rtien established institutions and ideas are being questioned they have never been ques tioned before in o\ir history. Much of this questioning is being done by the members of your generation, and it is your generation iirtiich ultimately vill have to provide most of the answers to those questions. I hope that as you look for those answers, you will remember the obligation of every educated man and voaaan to draw careful distinctions between those ideas lAich must be readjusted and those which should be pre served. The fact that many accepted ways of thinking seem artificial and unjust does not warrant the rejection 8-11 estsblished standards • Nor should our proper re spect for the past and our legitimate desire for stability lead us to defend thoughtlessly that which is oiitmoded and obsolete. Your challenge will be that of reconciling continuity and change^ of glvisg new applications and fresh expressions to our traditional values — especially our concern for the dignity and integrity of every individual. By meeting that challenge you can make this time of rapid change a time of substantial growth and fulfillment — for your selves, for your coomunity and for your nation. As I extend to you my personal congratulations and best wishes, I look to the future with greater confidence be cause I know of the exceptional qualifications you bring to the exceptional demands of our time. INDIFFERENT PROPOSAL A News Analysis by Kathleen Fitzgerald In a short article last week I made reference to the lack of concern about the Student Coun cil elections on the part of the student body as evidenced by the lack of candidates for many of the offices. Fortunately, before that article was published a few individuals did reg ister. Of course most of them are running with out any one to oppose them but, by gollies, 15 or so out of close to 500 isn’t bad is it? Actually, it is not a lack of opposition that I am concerned with, it is a complete lack of support for a student government organization on this campus. How many of you have talked to a candidate? How many of you thought to find out who your candidate was? How many of you will take time to vote? I’m sure that these questions have captured the interest of students everywhere on the cam pus and that there will soon be a great surge of awareness and a massive, unified effort put forth to support the S.C.A. and No, huh? Ah well, it hardly matters, does it? After aU, we have never had a functional student government and in spite of all the grip ing about lack of student voice and a heavy- handed Administration, we apparently neither want nor need one.
