May 27,1970 The N.C. Essay Page 4 The View From Here Thb last article was to be about the Hat- field-McGovern anti-war petition. I thought I would tell you of the vital importance of this proposal, that you should read and study it carefully, that you ^ould act upon it. Essen tially, these last words were to try and con vince you that this petition is one you should do something about. But I can’t write about that. Nor can I say anything about the necessity of voting for your SCA president. Fm tired of writing about re sponsibility and concern. If you haven’t realized by now the significance of these things well, chances are you never wilL L8ce the man says, you’re either hip to it or you ain’t. Tve been letting my ego spill out all over these pages for ahnost a year now. fve attemp ted to tell you what was on my mind, things that were affecting me, trying to find some rapport level of rapport, looking for some small thing we might share together. I hope that the words have ocassionally meant something, that some of what has been written has reached you. That’s really all I can ever hope and ask for. by Mike Ferguson In retro^ect, I think the Essay has been valuable. We haven’t always accomplished what we wanted, and we haven’t always been ‘r^t’. But we gave you something that tried to be honest,'that tried to care, something that, de^ite all the criticism, deserved and otherwise, that came our way, you might be able to trust. I know there are a few of us in this office who never stopped trying and car ing. In an effort to create some interest, I de voted a lot of ^ce to rode and rolL Some times it was interesting, possibly even vital to some of you. To others, Fm sure it was a constant bore. For me, it was fun^ and good discipline. Rock was largely a vehicle for me - I ‘us^’ it to get to you in hopes that we might get together. It didn’t happen often, but when it did all the hassles involved were over- we^ed. Fve reached the point (as I always knew I would) that it is no k>nger necessary for me to write about rock. There are other things to do and it’s simply time to move on. The music is stiU beautiful and meaningful; it’s just no longer important to write about it. We’ve all grown a little this year. I don’t know where any of this is going. We’ve shared much this year - not always as much as I wanted, sometimes more than I expected. Perhaps I woukln’t feel quite this way had I been here longer, but it’s been a long year and yet seems to be endii^ a bit prematurely. It won’t ever be quite the same again. The view from here has been sometmies very real and very beautiful, sometimes un certain, and now, strai^ely perhaps, a trifle sad. Well we don’t have a certain unit called a student body for a student government to represent! I have been here for four years and have seen two instances where there was a semblance of student unity. The first was after the death of the school’s first President, Dr. Giannini and the second was after the death of the four Kent State students. The parallel and conclusion are obvious. That’s quite a record isn’t it? If I am killed myself would you care? If I killed you would you notice? In the face of overwhelming odds, I propose that unless there is more support, every form of student voice and self-government be abol ished. I exhort every student to live by his little yeUow (for happiness, right?) handbook to force the Administration to make decisions concerning every aspect of student life to accept those decisions, to the letter, with a passive humility and above all, to hold his ground and remain static, insensible and of course, apathetic! We should turn out some fine artists, not to mention concerned himian beings that way. WHAT’S COMING NEXT YEAR (Con’t from page 2) Meanwhile, those of us here at home will be looking after the summer session and getting things ready for opening in the Fall. By the time you read this, let’s hope that you have all come through examinations with flying colors. After that, I hope wherever you are, you have a lively and productive summer and that you get a bit of relaxation before re turning to new and better things in the Fall.
