The Women’s Soccer Team added two more victories to their skein of four as
they won the Flower City Tournament in Rochester, NY during tlic weekend of
September 8-9. Junior Ann Thorpe was named MVP while Sophomore Collette
Gilligan was honored as the Offensive Player of the toumament.
This toumament was a tremendous test this early in the season. Beating
Plymouth State 3-0 (ranked 4th in nation) on Saturday was an excellent result. We
played well all over the park. The 2-1 victory over William Smith proved to be
a tougher game. This was not a pretty win, but being down 1-0 and coming back
to win was impressive,” said Coach Pereira. William Smith was ranked #3
nationally.
MEN’S SOCCER
The men’s soccer team split a couple of games at the Mary Washington
Toumament during the weekend of September 8-9. On Saturday, they lost 0-1 to
the host school and came back to post a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon on Sunday.
Coach Alan Dawson expressed his dissatisfaction with the play of the team in
describing this as “the worst weekend of soccer from this group.” He also said,
“We need to get back to basics and get rid of the idea that we are a good team!”

Toumament and the Rochester Flower
City Toumament.
They were able to overpower superb
teams such as number three ranked
William-Smith, and number five
ranked Plymouth State. Although the
team has already played extremely
difficult matches, the most difficult
opponents they have yet to play arc
North Carolina State University, Barry
College, and regional rival Mary
Washington.
Joe Pereira, who has coached the
women for seven years, feels that the
success of the team lies in the rctum of
three All-American players—Anne
Thorpe, Catherine Byme, and Tricia
Criswell. “With such a strong upper
class group retuming, we are hoping to
match last year and maybe go one step
further by being in the national finals
this year,” comments Coach Pereira.
The women’s team made it to the na
tional semi-finals last year but fell short
to Ithaca College.
