September 24, 1990 sMALL TALK Page 3 Sports Highlights (Sept. 3 - 9) FOOTBALL The Monarchs opened iheir second season ever on Saturday, September 8 at Cumberland (KY) with a 43-12 loss. After getting on the board first with an opening quarter 35 yard touchdown via the air, the Cumberland offense answered with 21 points in the first half. Half time score: 21-6. Cumberland’s Scott Hamilton who scored 2 T.D.’s In the first half on runs of 14 yards and 1 yard, caught a 21 yard pass from (QB) Wes Grcibel for his 3rd tally of the night with 7:02 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Methodist’s Bobby Ellis blocked the “point after” attempt making the score 27-6. The fourth quarter saw Cumberland’s reserve QB Chris Watson tlirow 2 long T.D. strikes of 28 and 40 yards. Topping off an explosive 4 th quarter was a 43 yard field goal by Cumberland’s Bryan Metzger. Methodist’s aerial combination of QB Robbie Barnhill to Rich Jinnette produced a 2nd touchdown in the final period with a 10 yard scoring pass. Barnhill was 10 for 16 with 1 interception and 2 touchdowns. Rich Jinnette was the favorite receiver with 3 catches for 69 yards and 2 T.D.’s. The leading rusher was Mike Yanovok with 31 yards. Defensively, the Monarchs were led by Willie Blue who had 8 tackles and 1 interception. Rich Pope and Russell Seaton had 6 tackles each. CROSS COUNTRY Coach Craig Penney look his young cross country runners to the Pembroke State Invitational Meet on Saturday, September 8. The hot, humid weatherand the strong field caused Coach Penney to say, “Our young squad has a long way to go. However, I am pleased with their First Meet performance. Coach Ann David.son’s women golfers improved each day with a final round of 324. “The UNC tournament is by far the strongest field we’ll face all year”, remarked Coach Davidson. “It is an opportunity for a challenge and learning experience against maybe 8-10 of the toughest Division One schools in the country,” she said. “I did not know what to expect from this team which lost two outstanding seniors in Suzanne Hughes and Melissa D’Ziabo. Now that 1 have seen some of the individual bright spots, I am beginning to have some perspective for their potential,” said the new Coach. WOMEN’S SOCCER Record: Overall: Conference: Latest Rankings: W L T 4 0 0 0 0 0 #1 in the nation The Women’s Soccer Team added two more victories to their skein of four as they won the Flower City Tournament in Rochester, NY during tlic weekend of September 8-9. Junior Ann Thorpe was named MVP while Sophomore Collette Gilligan was honored as the Offensive Player of the toumament. This toumament was a tremendous test this early in the season. Beating Plymouth State 3-0 (ranked 4th in nation) on Saturday was an excellent result. We played well all over the park. The 2-1 victory over William Smith proved to be a tougher game. This was not a pretty win, but being down 1-0 and coming back to win was impressive,” said Coach Pereira. William Smith was ranked #3 nationally. MEN’S SOCCER The men’s soccer team split a couple of games at the Mary Washington Toumament during the weekend of September 8-9. On Saturday, they lost 0-1 to the host school and came back to post a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon on Sunday. Coach Alan Dawson expressed his dissatisfaction with the play of the team in describing this as “the worst weekend of soccer from this group.” He also said, “We need to get back to basics and get rid of the idea that we are a good team!” ■Si. ^ by Lisa Chavez Methodist College women’s soccer team, ranked number one in the nation, lived up to its billing September 12th by soundly defeating Greensboro College 8-0. The Lady Monarchs outshot Greensboro 30-2 and scored four goals in each half. Center Forward Collette Gilligan scored a goal within the first five minutes of the game. Anne Thorpe and Traci Wilson also contributed two goals each, while Robyn Leff and Kathy Bryant each had one goal and one assist. Sandra Soler had one goal also. This is the team’s first year of being ranked as number one in the nation. The program has been in existence for seven years. At the start of the season, the team gained their ranking by win ning the North Carolina Wesleyan Toumament and the Rochester Flower City Toumament. They were able to overpower superb teams such as number three ranked William-Smith, and number five ranked Plymouth State. Although the team has already played extremely difficult matches, the most difficult opponents they have yet to play arc North Carolina State University, Barry College, and regional rival Mary Washington. Joe Pereira, who has coached the women for seven years, feels that the success of the team lies in the rctum of three All-American players—Anne Thorpe, Catherine Byme, and Tricia Criswell. “With such a strong upper class group retuming, we are hoping to match last year and maybe go one step further by being in the national finals this year,” comments Coach Pereira. The women’s team made it to the na tional semi-finals last year but fell short to Ithaca College. Rob Pilewski, who led the men's golf team to new heights in 1989-90, receives the Sykes Cup Award from Athletic Director Tom Austin. Sports Highlights (September 10 -16) FOOTBALL The Monarch football team opened its 1990 home season with a disappointing 10-0 loss to Washington and Lee University. Adding to the gloom was the costly Injury to the number 1 receiver. Rich Jinette, who suffered a broken collarbone. His chances of retuming this season are doubtful. Offensively, Steve McNeil led all rashing for Methodist with 99 yards on 25 carries. McNeil also caught 5 passes for 36 yards. Russell Seaton led the defense with 5 unassisted tackles, 7 assisted tackles and broke up 3 passes. Last weeks’ defensive standout, Willie Blue, broke up two passes recovered a fumble and was in on 10 tackles. Others who recovered fumbles were James Brown, Bobby Ellis and Joe Arbogast. Rich Pope and James Brown had one interception each. VOLLEYBALL September 11 (Home): Methodist defeated Meredith 15-7; 15-9; 15-13 September 14 (Away): Methodist lost to Averett 15-12; 15-17; 15-10; 7-15; 8-5 September 15 (Away): Methodist lost to Ferrum 15-9; 8-15; 2-15; 12-15 Methodist defeated Salem 15-4; 15-2 The Lady Monarch Volleyball team posted its first ever win in the now PAC with a victory over Meredith College. Danielle Genest led the team with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .455. Jill Sturenfeldt followed with 9 kills and a .277 hitting percentage. Patty Strahan had 4 .service aces and Lorie Sanlta had a team high of 15 digs. The Averett and Ferrum games were hard fought matches I'or the young Methodist team. “The four freshmen and two juniors are showing a lot of promise for the future,” said first year coach Karen Smith. Coach Smith fell her squad had a solid beginning and expects her team to steadily improve with a few more games behind them. WOMEN’S GOLF The Women’s Golf team traveled to Farmville, Virginia to participate In the Lady Lancer Toumament at Division II National Champion, Longwood College. Par (37-37) 74. The host team won the event while individual honors went to UNC-W senior Nina Van Doumpt, an intematlonal student - athlete from Sweden. Methodist finished 5th out of 9 teams with the following 3 day touils: Day 1: 335 Day 2: 324 Day 3: 334 Individual scores for Methodist: Junior Rindy Gamer 84-79-84 = 247 Junior Denise Woodard 83-79-86 = 248 Sophomore Allyson Greer 2-83-83 = 248 Sophomore Stacie MeTigue 86-85-81 = 252 Sophomore Jen Potvin 90-90-90 = 270 Bright spots for this toumament featured 79’s by Rindy Gamer and Denise Woodard on the second day of play. Stacie McTigue continues to improve with a team low round of 81 on the last day and her career best tournament. “Incon sistency on the part of our veteran players plus px)r putting and concentration lapses accounted for the disappointing 5th place finish,” said Coach Davidson. The new coach had praise for the team saying “The scores will begin to Improve soon because there are several key areas that are really showing progress that are not reflected in tlie scores of this toumament. WOMEN’S SOCCER Overall Record: 6-0-0 Conference: 1-0-0 Latest Ranking: #1 in Nation September 12 (Home): Methodist 8, Greensboro 0 September 16 (Home): Methodist 7, Randolph-Macon 0 Coach Joe Periera’s women booters made it 6 in a row with impressive wins over Greensboro College and Randolph-Macon to open the home season. Collette Gilligan had an outstanding week with 4 goals. She had one against Greensboro and 3 in the Randolph-Macon contest Traci WILson also had 4 goals with 2 in both games. Robin Leff had 3 goals last week. “Wehad very impressive numbers in both games this week. In the Greensboro game, the entire team played very strong,” said coach Pereira. “Against Randolph-Macon we really dominated the game out-shooting them by a wide margin,” added the coach. MEN’S SOCCER Overall Record: 4 2 0 Conference: 0 0 0 September 13: Methodist 2, UNC-W 1 September 15: Methodist 5, East Carolina 1 This week saw our men’s soccer team post a couple of big wins over Division 1 programs to successfully open their home season. Coach Alan Dawson described the win over UNC-W as scrappy, well-eamed and a very composed performance. “The confidence gained in the win over a good UNC-W squad carried over into the game against E.C.U. We are, hopefully, back on track again,” said Coach Dawson. The coach singled out several individuals for praise, “Jay Haley collected 4 goals in a brilliant performance against E.C.U. Finbarr Clancy has played back to back marvelous performance as he scored the winning goal against UNC-W and made four assists to Jay Haley in the win over E.C.U.
