Football Player
Injures Neck
by Eric Kimbel
Freshman Jim Thomas was carried
off the Methodist Football field on a
stretcher during a game in early October.
All those attending were distressed at the
events, but the game continued after
Thomas's departure in an ambulance.
Simll Talk interviewed Thomas to
get his angle on the events of that after
noon. Thomas said that he "took a
block," and another player "came in and
pushed his neck back almost until his
head touched his back." Thomas said "he
remained conscious," but immobile for
the forty-five minutes, and was then tak
en to the hospital.
Thomas said that "the doctors and
coaches decided he had strained the liga
ments in his neck." He was back in class
the next day, but was not allowed to prac
tice for weeks. The coaching staff said
that Thomas's departure on the stretcher
is a common "precautionary measure"
taken with all neck injuries.
