November 22,1991 SMALL TALK Page 7 Monarchs Suffer Homecoming Loss by Eric Kimbel The Methodist Monarchs suffered a loss to Bridgewater College during the 1991 Homecoming football game. Meth odist played with high intensity through out the game, and the team's efforts were backed by a large crowd and cheerlead ers. The coin toss was won by Bridgewa ter, and the team elected to receive. Both teams played strong defense in the first quarter. Tim Shaw forced the Bridgewa ter quarterback to fumble, and the ball was recovered for the Monarchs by Tra vis Cross. The quarter ended scoreless. Bridgewater took a time out early in the second quarter to regroup on offense. Bridgewater scored a touchdown early in the second, and completed the extra point attempt to post a seven to zero lead over the Monarchs. Vander Outlaw inter cepted a Bridgewater pass with less than 10 minutes to go until halftime, but the remainder of the second quarter was scoreless as well. The halftime activities included a routine by the Methodist College Dance Team, and the 1991 Homecoming Court was announced. The second half began with a kick- off to the Monarchs. The Bridgewater Eagles held the Monarchs and took over a possession after a Monarch punt. The Eagles drove downfield and scored on a twenty-four-yard field goal by Steve Grabeel. Bridgewater then scored a touchdown and converted the extra point to go up seventeen to zero at the end of the third. During the fourth quarter, Bridgewa ter scored .three touchdowns and a field goal, while holding Methodist scoreless. The Eagles won the game with a final score of thirty-four to zero. Sophomore Scott Mclver was voted the game's most valuable player for Methodist because of his consistent de fensive efforts. Football Player Injures Neck by Eric Kimbel Freshman Jim Thomas was carried off the Methodist Football field on a stretcher during a game in early October. All those attending were distressed at the events, but the game continued after Thomas's departure in an ambulance. Simll Talk interviewed Thomas to get his angle on the events of that after noon. Thomas said that he "took a block," and another player "came in and pushed his neck back almost until his head touched his back." Thomas said "he remained conscious," but immobile for the forty-five minutes, and was then tak en to the hospital. Thomas said that "the doctors and coaches decided he had strained the liga ments in his neck." He was back in class the next day, but was not allowed to prac tice for weeks. The coaching staff said that Thomas's departure on the stretcher is a common "precautionary measure" taken with all neck injuries. Men’s Soccer if Battles To M.''. * Homecoming Tie by Eric Kimbel The Monarch Men's Soccer team tied the Maryville Scots during the 1991 Homecoming game. The Monarchs went into the game posting the best record ever for a Methodist Men's Soccer team. They were ranked number one in the South Regional Poll and number five in the Nation. A large number of fans at tended the Homecoming game and viewed some exciting soccer action. Maryville scored first in the game, but the Monarchs came fighting back to tie the game before halftime. Maryville scored first in the second half, but again the Monarch offense tied the game at two apiece to take the game into overtime. The Scots scored in the first half of overtime and held a 3 to 2 lead going into the overtime halftime. The Monarchs scored early in the second and held the Maryville Scots scoreless until the end of the overtime period. The Homecoming game ended with a 3 to 3 tie.
