Going into the last two weeks of regular season play Methodist was in contention for fct place Dixie Conference honors. Methodist recorded their first 20- win season since 1988 en route to their second place Dixie Conference finish. The team ended the season with an over all mark of 20-17 and a Dixie record of 7-3. Scheduling placed the Lady Mon archs at a disadvantage during the final two weeks as the team was forced to travel to both Ferrum and Averett Col lege. The teams' inability to play well away firom the fiiendly confmes of the March F. Riddle Center proved to be the deciding factor in both their regular sea son finish and their 3-1 loss to Ferrum in the semifmals of the Dixie Tournament. The Lady Monarchs ended the regu lar season with an overall mark of 9-8-2. On Wednesday. October 28th Methodist recorded a 0-(T tie against arch-rival NC Wesleyan to gain partial ownership of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Confer ence title. The Lady Monarchs faced ad versity this season the with loss of two starters to season-ending injuries. Con sidering the youth and inexperience the team had some impressive performances against quality teams including a 0-0 overtime tie to national powerhouse Uni versity of Rochester. Becky Morton (Jacksonville, NC) was named the Tour nament Most Valuable Offensive Player for her outstanding play. Goalkeeper Kate Howard (Wooster, OH) had an out standing tournament making 22 saves as she faced 32 shots and 22 comers. On October 1 Itli the Lady Monarchs captured another impressive regional vic tory as they ousted Old Dominion Ath letic Conference rival Roanoke College 2-0. The team recorded other shutout victories over Division II teams St. An drews and Lees McRae and Division III Washington & Lee. The Lady Monarchs named Becky Morton (FR., Jacksonville, NC), Colette Gilligan (SR., Dublin, keland), Jennifer Kimball () and Ruth Keegan were name to the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic All- Conference 1st team. Goalkeeper Kate Howard (Wooster, OH) along with Kara Leonard (Tarpon Springs, FL) and Jenni fer Savani (Lock Haven, PA) were named 2nd team All-Conference. Monarch’s Football Gains Valuable Experience For '93 The Monarch football team has struggled through some disappointing outings this fall. The team opened the season on the road against Charleston Southern. The contest was extremely close with the Monarchs losing 20-19. During the final minute of the contest Methodist scored. After the score Head Coach Jim Sypult decided to go for a two point conversion for the win. The Mon archs failed to convert leaving the team just shy a victory. The Monarchs then hosted the Quak ers of Guilford College. Mental break downs both offensively and defensively led to a Quaker 37-8 victory. The next weekend the Monarchs were still unable to get on track as they suffered a 37-14 defeat at the hands of Salisbury State University. Methodist then traveled to Newport News. Va for a contest with the Apprentice School. The Apprentice scnool dominated play on both sides of the ball as they ousted the Monarchs 49- 0. Methodist bounced back and played impressively against Catholic University on October 3rd but still fell short of the victory 27-21. On the road the next weekend against Bridgewater College the Monarchs were shutout 27-0. Offensive miscues and failure to make quick decision on defense contrib uted to the 27-6 loss to Davidson College on Homecoming. The Monarchs turned the ball over eight times in their loss to the Wildcats. On the road against a tough Mary ville College team Methodist suffered an other tough loss 34-6. The last home game slated the Monarchs against Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Hampden-Sydney. Methodist played with lots of intensity but still came up short losing 17-3. Even with the losing record this Monarch football team is much improved over last year's team. The 1992 Mon archs are very young and this youth and inexperience has been the cause of many of the losses. With valuable playing ex perience this fall the 1993 team looks to avenge their reputation as they return an experienced team with high ambition for a winning season.
