Let's Get It Back by Eric Rhew In 1994 Head Coach Steve Conley and the men's golf team are playing for the national championship and will settle for nothing less. After winning the National Championship in '90, '91, '92 and placing third in last year's tournament, a big disappointment for Coach Conley, it's time to get back on track. The one thing that MC has in their favor is that they have home-course advantage during the national champion ship. The championship will be held at King's Grant Country Club, May 17-20. The old golf team starts the season ranked second in the country behind Cal-San Diego, last year's champion. "1 do not mind being second; it takes some of the pressures off the team. I want my players to focus on winning the national championship and not to worry about defending the home course." Junior Ryan Jenkins (last year's national champion), sophomore Sammy Hudson (last year's player of the conference), junior Jimmy Nickerson and sophomore Jamie Hurless are four of the five who will travel with the team when the spring schedule starts. The fifth spot will be awarded to the person playing the best at that time. Double Your Fun by Chris Gillen The Methodist men's tennis team has an exciting outlook for the 1994 session. The Monarchs are currently ranked 22nd in the nation and 6th in the south in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason polls. Two reasons for the great accomplishments of the men's team are the return of the top play ers Mark Faber and Wade Liles. Both represented the Monarchs last October when they won the Rolex Intercopllegiate Tennis Championship at Emory Univer- Women's Tennis Loses Two Players By Brendan Elwell The Methodist College women's tennis team will have to start the season without their top two players. The Monarchs lost Janna Bias, the thirteenth ranked player in the Dixie Conference, and Dina LaVoe. Bias was a transfer to Fayetteville Tech while LaVoe is on an internship at Saddlebrook Resort in Florida. LaVoe will be back for next season, but Coach Theresa Warrell, in her second year, knows the team will have to regroup after the loss over her number-one player. "We're not as strong as last season losing our top two players, but positive attitude counts for a lot," she said. "Our goal is to be the best in the Dixie Conference." Last year the Lady Monarchs finished second in the Conference behind Christopher Newport, and this year after the fall season, they ranked sixth in the region. The Lady Monarchs started practice on Feb. 7 and start play on March 4 against Christopher Newport. Women's Golf Gears Up by Chuck Miller What do you do after winning 7 out of 8 national champion ships? Gofor8outof9! That'sexactly w hat the Lady Monarch golf team is doing this spring. It will be a difficult task after losing two key players from last year's team: Allyson Greer and Amy H6ke—both were Division III individual champions. Most teams would have been devastated by such a lose, but not the Lady Monarchs. They are currently ranked #1 in Division III and #51 in Division I, II, and III. Kelly Capp, Elizabeth Horton, Ana Rodriguez, and Michelle Cobb will lead the 1994 team. The talent doesn't stop there as six other players bid for the fifth spot. There is no lack of talent on this year's team. "We are deeper than we've ever been," says Coach Ann Davidson. The members of the Lady Monarchs have a chance to compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Open if selected as one of the top seven players in Division II and III. With a new format of selecting players, the Lady Monarchs will be limited to the number of players sent to the tournament. This fall, the women's golf team had an impressive win at the James Madison Invitational Tournament, beating a Penn State team that was ranked #17 in Division I by eleven strokes. sity in the doubles tournament. Coach Theresa Warrell stated that it was an outstanding opportu nity to reach the nationals and that the team was very proud of Mark and Wade. The men's tennis team begins a four-match home stand against Christopher Newport on March 5. The team plays Old Dominion University on March 7. Guilford College comes to Methodist on March 9. Finally, Nazareth Col lege will play Methodist on March 12. Softball Swings Into Action by Eric Rhew After finishing fourth in the Conference last year. Head Coach Karen Smith has high hopes for this year's softball team. "The Dixie Conference does not have any team that really stands out, so it should be a real competitive season," says Smith. An increase in the pitching staff is a big plus for the Monarchs this season. Now that sophomore Monica Dunn has a year of experience, freshmen teammates Heather Lucus and Sharon Smily are expected to step up and contribute. Junior Kerry Oliastro and Stephine Greene will also help pitch when called upon. In the infield, senior Anne Uleman is the only player who has her position locked up. All the other players will be battling for the other positions, but hitting will be an important factor when the decision is made for the starting lineup. The outfield is in the same situation. Kerry O., last year's MVP, who plays centerfield, has an edge on all the outfielders. Still hitting will determine who wins the position, according to Coach Smith. Junior Kim Miller and freshman Jennifer Longstaff will catch for the team. The two catchers are junior Kim Miller and freshman Jennifer Longstaff. The first game is Feb. 26 against Barton College.
