10 Monday, September 14, 1998 SPORTS Pride New Members of Athletic Staff Assume Duties Compiled From Press Releases By Jameit Boone, Staff Writer MC’s athletic program has chosen some new staff members and promoted several others. Bob McEvoy leads the line-up as he takes the helm as the school’s fifth director of athletics. Previously Methodist’s assis tant director of athletics (1995-98), the new director will continue as the head coach of the Monarch basketball team. He will en ter his seventh campaign as the men’s bas ketball coach this fall. As the director of athletics, McEvoy is responsible for the overall management of Methodist’s 18 var sity athletic teams. Bob McEvoy Prior to coming to Methodist in 1992, McEvoy was the head boys' basketball coach at Cape Fear High School for one season following a seven-year stint as the head men’s basketball coach at the Univer sity of North Carolina - Greensboro. He was also the director of athletics and the men’s basketball coach at Mount Olive College for two years. McEvoy gained more coaching experience as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina - Pembroke, as the head boys’ basketball coach at Douglas Byrd High School for four years, and as a gradu ate assistant for the men’s basketball pro gram at East Carolina University for two years. The Monarchs have finished in the NCAA-III’s top 25 for the Sears Directors’ Cup all-sports trophy two of the past three years. McEvoy began his new duties on Aug. 17, David Smith will be working under Bob McEvoy as Methodist’s assistant men’s basketball coach. After three years as a volunteer assistant coach. Smith clinches the newly-established full-time position. Prior to coaching at Methodist, Smith obtained a wealth of successful coaching experience in both North Carolina and Florida after playing professional basket ball for the Derby Rams in England for two years. His previous coaching positions in clude stints as the head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at South View High School in Hope Mills, NC and as the head coach at Keystone Heights High School (FL). David Smith Smith graduated from Methodist in 1981 with a bachelor of science degree and earned his master’s degree from the Uni versity of North Carolina. While attending Methodist, the three-year starter was his team's MVP for his senior season. During Smith’s previous three years on the Methodist staff, the Monarchs amassed a 43-35 record (.551) including two win ning seasons. Methodist’s 1996-97 team captured the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles on its way to a NCAA-III National Tournament "Elite Eight” finish. Farley Youman, the new head men’s tennis coach and director of the professional tennis management program, comes to Methodist after serving a year as the head men's tennis coach at Campbell University. Certified at the highest level by the United States Professional Tennis Asssociation, Youman earned a B.S. degree in health and physical education from Mer cer University in 1988 and a M.Ed. degree in health and physical education from Valdosta State University in 1992. Farley Youman Youman also served as a tennis profes sional at Forest Grove Athletic Club in Pal estine, IL (1995-97), a health wellness teacher at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL (1995-97), the head men’s and women’s tennis coach and sports information director at Rockford College in Rockford, IL (1994-95), a tennis pro fessional at Winnetka Park District in Winnetka, IL (1992-94), the head tennis director at WTS International in Washing ton, DC (1989-92) and the assistant tennis professional at John Gardiner’s Resorts in Scottsdale and Sedona, AZ (1988-89). Daniel Arnold has been chosen by Methodist College as its new head women’s tennis coach and assistant director of the school’s professional tennis management program. Arnold is coming off a two-year stint as a graduate assistant in teaching and research for Appalachian State University, where he spent the last year working in academic services for athletics. Daniel Arnold Last summer, Arnold served as the co ordinator of the United States Professional Tennis Registry Symposium and Trade Show in Hilton Head, SC. In 1987, he earned an associate’s degree in applied sci ence in accounting from Cobleskill College, and a bachelor of science degree in busi ness form Buffalo State College in 1995, Arnold also received a master of arts de gree in health, leisure, and exercise science with a concentration in sport management from Appalachian State in May. The athletic program has named Doug Tabbert as new head women’s volleyball coach and physical education instructor. Tabbert comes to Methodist from Bluffton College (OH) where he was a graduate as sistant coach for both volleyball and soft ball for the past two years. He has worked numerous summer volleyball clinics, includ ing the 1997 University of Texas at Austin Volleyball Camps, the 1997 Northwest Vol leyball Camps in Findlay, OH and the 196 Doug Tabbert Kansas State University Volleyball Coaches Clinic. The versatile Tabbert has also served as a performance enhancement specialist for the Bluffton women’s basketball program (1997-98) and the Kansas State volleyball (1995-96) and track and field (1996) teams. In 1989, Tabbert graduated from Baker University (KS), with a B.S. degree in psy chology and business administration with Summa Cum Laude distinction. He will receive an M.E. degree in developmental kinesiology from Bowling Green State University (OH) in July. Jennifer Wuyscik, promoted to athletic trainer, will keep the Monarch teams healthy with help from her new assistant trainers Chris Garrett and Brandon Reynolds. Wuyscik receives the promotion to head athletic trainer and director of the sports medicine program after serving three years as an assistant trainer. Wuyscik will over see the athletic training needs of Methodist’s 18 NCAA-III varsity teams and three junior varsity squads. During 1997- 98, the Monarchs amassed six national tour nament teams including two champions. Jennifer Wuyscik Prior to coming to Methodist, Wuyscik was a head athletic trainer at Flowing Wells Junior High School (1994-95) and St. Gre gory College Preparatory School (1993- 94), both in Tucson, AZ. She also served Trinity College (CT) as an assistant trainer for two years (1991-93). Wuyscik received her B.S.E. degree from Central Connecticut State University in 1991 and her M.S. degree from the Uni versity of Arizona in 1995. Chris Garrett and Brandon Reynolds will be working under Jennifer Wuyscik as assistant trainers. Wuyscik, Garrett, and Reynolds are all certified (ATC). Garrett comes to Methodist from Hargrave Military Academy in Chatam, VA, where he was head athletic trainer. He has a B.S. degree from Ferrum College (VA, 1996) and a M.S. degree from West Vir ginia University (1997). Reynolds was most recently an intern athletic trainer at Bridgewater College (VA). He earned a B.S. degree from Bridgewater College (1996) and a M.S. degree from Northwest State University (LA, 1998).
