In 2004, George Walker Bush was re-elected to this position. The Inaugural festivities actually began On Tuesday, January 18, with a presentation of “Saluting Those Who Serve” at the MCI Center in Wash ington D.C. On Wednesday that week, President Bush, along with Vice President Dick Cheney, their wives and all the daughters attended the Black Tie and Boots Ball. It lasted well into the night. On January 20,2005, Bush and Cheney were sworn in for a second term as President and Vice President of the United States, respectively, by Chief Justice William Rehnquist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert on the steps of the US Capitol Building. Many respected Congressmen, past Presidents, including Jimmy Carter, George Herbert Bush and Bill Clinton, US Supreme Court Justices, distinguished guests and many close family and friends at tended. Before the Oath of Office was taken that day. Bush and his family attended a closed church service at St. John’s Church, across from the White House. Then, after Bush and Cheney were sworn in, the Marine Band played “Hail to the Chief for Bush” and “Ruffles and Flourishes” for Cheney. In the Inaugural Address, Bush stated that his “most solemn duty is to protect this nation and its people against further attacks and emerging threats. Some have unwisely chosen to test America’s resolve, and have found it firm.” He later stated that, “America will not impose our own style of gov ernment on the unwilling. That was just the beginning of a long day for the President who attended nine different balls, all in one night. Security was tight dur ing the events, but do not think that the Inauguration took place without protestors. There were protestors, and many were lined all along Pennsylvania Avenue. Some carried cardboard boxes in the shape of coffins to protest the war and to symbolize the soldiers dying in the war in Iraq.
