Every four years, the people
of the United States elect a new
Commander In Chief.
In 2004, George Walker Bush
was re-elected to this position. The
Inaugural festivities actually began
On Tuesday, January
18, with a presentation
of “Saluting Those
Who Serve” at the
MCI Center in Wash
ington D.C.
On Wednesday
that week, President
Bush, along with
Vice President Dick
Cheney, their wives
and all the daughters
attended the Black Tie and Boots
Ball. It lasted well into the night.
On January 20,2005, Bush
and Cheney were sworn in for a
second term as President and Vice
President of the United States,
respectively, by Chief Justice
William Rehnquist and House
Speaker Dennis Hastert on the
steps of the US Capitol Building.
Many respected Congressmen,
past Presidents, including Jimmy
Carter, George Herbert Bush and
Bill Clinton, US Supreme Court
Justices, distinguished guests and
many close family and friends at
tended. Before the Oath of Office
was taken that day. Bush and his
family attended a closed church
service at St. John’s Church, across
from the White House. Then, after
Bush and Cheney were sworn in,
the Marine Band played “Hail to
the Chief for Bush” and “Ruffles
and Flourishes” for Cheney.
In the Inaugural Address,
Bush stated that his “most solemn
duty is to protect this nation and
its people against further attacks
and emerging threats. Some have
unwisely chosen to test America’s
resolve, and have found it firm.”
He later stated that, “America will
not impose our own style of gov
ernment on the unwilling. Our goal
instead is to help others find their

according to Philip Williams,
Dean of Academic Affairs, “The
academic catalogue is an aca

the full faculty committee and

“By enforcing the catalogue
we are upholding the facul

Dawn Congleton, the Registrar.
According to the Methodist
College mission statement, “The
purpose of Methodist College
is to provide an undergraduate
and graduate education firmly
grounded in the liberal arts tradi

and ethical decision making; to
provide distinctive professional
and graduate programs that
complement the undergraduate
programs; to provide educational
and cultural services and resourc

own voice, attain their own free
dom, and make their own way.”
After the Inauguration cer
emony, the President participated
in the Inaugural Parade down
Pennsylvania Avenue. That was
just the beginning of a long day
for the President who attended nine
different balls, all in one night.
Security was tight dur
ing the events, but do not think
that the Inauguration took place
without protestors. There were
protestors, and many were lined
all along Pennsylvania Avenue.
Some carried cardboard boxes in
the shape of coffins to protest the
war and to symbolize the soldiers
dying in the war in Iraq. Others
were expressing that they felt the
Inauguration was far too upscale
and that the festivities should not
be so extravagant.

Students should be aware
of requirement no. five: “Er

Plan your education by

when she said, “The Academic

the checksheet is Map Quest.”
