Methodist College Newspaper WWW.smalltalkmc.com Fayetteville, Established 1961 Volume 44,Issue Biology Professor Receives Professor of the Year Award : _1 MATT McHALE Staff Writer Methodist College is ac credited and well known for its excellent faculty, so receiving an award for being the top professor is quite an accomplishment. This year MC awarded Professor of the Year to Dr. Lysa Marie Hartley the assistant pro fessor of biology on April 3rd at the annual Spring Awards Cer emony. Students and faculty who voted sent letters of recommen dation, which became nomina tions and were taken into consid eration by the college. Dr. Hart ley was shocked and surprised by the announcement of her award. She shouldn’t have been with the overwhelming support and love she has from both her students and coworkers. “Dr. Hartley has been an asset to the Biology Program. She is a wonderful teacher and advisor and goes out of her way to help her students,” said co-worker and friend. Dr. Lori Brookman. Dr. Hartley is a busy woman from taking care of her husband and two sons, Roland and Richard. She teaches and advises and has extensive expe rience in the Biology and Ecol ogy world with her previous job from the North Carolina Heritage Program, whose goal was to help conserve natural resources. She attended North Carolina State College and received her B.S. and Ph. D from there and her Masters at Duke Univer sity. You can have all the knowl edge in the world and still be a bad teacher. What sets Dr. Hartley apart from those other teachers? For one. Dr. Hart ley has the love of her students. “Dr. Hartley is an awesome teacher □. . . u , Photo by Matt McHale because |_yga Hartley, a Biology professor was awarded the Professor she makes of the Year award at the Spring Convocation on April 3rd. complicat ed things simple, she’s so ftinny, she’s just great,” said freshman Amy Harka who is in her Plant Communities class. The fun quality that Pro fessor Hartley posseses could be the reason for the award. “I have a lack of taking many things seriously,” Dr. Har ley said. Her students and co-workers feel that it is her exuberant per sonality, her quirky jokes and her general love for her job and her students that sets her apart. Dr. Hartley wants her fu ture students to know, 'Don’t leave your sense of hu mor at home, and keep your whining switch turned off.” She also added that, “Method ist College is so special because the students that go here are so awesome.” The ftiture looks bright for the science department with possible- construction of the new science building and a new professor will be hired soon.
