The Pen 7 and the pulmonary artery increased in proportion to the length of the body. In P. Schmidt’s “Unser Korper” one may read there . . the heart of an adult man is three times the size of the child’s, while the proportionate circumference of the aorta (close to the heart) remains the same. . . Dr. E. Young states that the heart is relatively smaller at the age of seven. But Dr. Karpovich, through his recent research conducted from the physiological laboratory, Spring field College, Springfield, Mass., points out in his tables Jn “The Heart Vol ume and Cross Section Areas of the Pulmonary Artery and the Aorta,” and “Ratio Between the Heart Vol ume and the Areas of Cross Sections of the Pulmonary Artery and the Aorta,” that this is not true; for, at the end of the first year the ratio of the heart volume to the aortic cross sec tion steadily increases. The same may be said with regard to the pul monary artery. Conclusions: “There is no difference between the development of the heart and the cross section of the largest arteries.” “The volume of the heart, cross sec tion areas of the aorta, and the pul monary show a close proportionality.” “The ratio of the heart volume to the size of the blood vessels is not de creased at the age of seven. There Is a steady gradual increase in this ratio which starts at the end of the first year.” PUPPETS By Francis Johnson Shakespeare said, “All the world is a stage and all the men and women merely players.” And such was true when he spoke of his age. Yet if he were present today he would say, “All the world is a marionette and all the men and women merely puppets.” We as Americans, we and others who are members of this vast world are merely silent and useful dolls. We are puppets, acting as another .wills us. It is quite true that we are en closed in a dark and unescapable world, forced to act by the laws of nature and unknowingly controlled by the laws of a Divine Being. Such is accepted, for these are forces that shall never be changed or criticized by human beings. We, as constituents of society—members of the American government — German government — Russian government — are puppets, living in this inverted bowl called the world, moved by strings controlled by human beings, for their personal glory and their desired end which we do n»t see. We have discarded our individual ism and have intelligently dissolved our personal conscience. They have vanished to such an extent that the dangling fingers of the operator of the mock drama can make us partici pate in brother-fight-brother fights that result in blood, and create ani mosity toward faithful followers, so that we might try to raise ourselves higher in the esteem of those authori tative powers who have no respect for our personal feelings. We as human beings are living in puppetry, we are being helplessly dangled about for the wishes of others. We no longer show our own true actions, but the actions and principles of those authoritative forces who control the strings in the marionette where we are the puppets. Yet a time must come when some of us must keep faith—must feed the spirit of the people—must hold brave ly to our ideas—to help free men— make them disciples of truth—to re move them from the marionette show as puppets and make them—men.
