SMITH, 47; ST. AUG., 33
Friday night, January 7, 1938, saw
the “Blue and White” quintet open
their ’38 basketball season in a hard-
tought and impressive battle with the
Smith “Bulls,” although the game
ended with a score of 47-33 In Smith’s
favor. The Smith squad is rated as
one of the best in the C.I.A.A. and
is composed mainly of veterans,
whereas our squad has received no
such outstanding recognition and is
composed of a goodly number of new
men. Looking at the game in this
light, the squad gave a very good ac
count of itself last Friday night at
Taylor Hall.
Bowers of Smith was high scorer In
the game with 14 points, while George
Skelly, top man tor St. Aug., was
close behind him with 11 tallies to
his credit. Not the high scorers of
the game, but especially in evidence
were Winfield Crews and Max Britto,
freshmen members of the squad.
Crewes, with his deadly overhand hook
shot, is definitely an asset to the
squad: while “Maxie” Britto, who
played his first basketball at St. Aug.
this year, with a bit more seasoning,
promises to be one of the greats in
basketball history of St. Augustine’s
College.
All eyes are looking expectantly
forward to the Shaw-St. Aug. game to
be played next Saturday, January 15.
With St. Aug.’s status as an under
dog in this forthcoming contest being
questioned after Smith administered
almost identical defeats to both the
schools (the score of the Smith-Shaw
game being: Smith, 49-35), there
threatens to be plenty of action next
Saturday night.
From casual observation it looks aa
if basketball at St. Aug. is taking a
turn for the better, and 1938 promises
to see the “Blue and White” come
out of the red.

JOKES
Joyner: The dean accused me of
calling him a fish!
Ruth: A fish? I don’t understand.
Joyner: I don’t either. All I said
was “Yes sah. Dean.”
Mac: My chick is color blind.
Speight: Color blind?
Mac: Uh-huh. When she gets mad,
she sees red and then the red turns
to green.
