EDITORIAL New years brin." wit.li tlu*ra new ideas. This year it will be the pol icy of “The Pen” to briu" to the attention of the students of this eampns certain problems that seem to be confronting' the rr(nip as a whole. It is the hope of the “Pen” staff to thereby crystallize ihese l)roblenLS in the minds of the stu dents in an effort to bring about some solution of our problems. Stu dent andi faculty oi)inion in the form of letters or articles will bo welcomed. Our first problem concerns itself with “The Pen” itself. How many students know how to becotne mem bers of the “Pen,” staff ? If a sur vey of the campus were made, the answer would be most disoppoint- in". iloi-e than this, some time ago a number of students led a demon stration with this cry, “AVc want ‘The Pen’ ” How very appropriate this was! As has already been suggested “The Pen” is a reflection both of and on the students of this campus. Consequently, they not only are re sponsible as contributors to “The Pen” but they shoixld have a voice in the selection or elect.ioii of the members of the staff of this publi cation. Perhaps that is the reason why our “Pcn” is not published at reg ular intervals. “Pen” staff mem bers feel Tio dircct responsibility to any one. They were placed on, the staff either because someone al ready there pulled a few strings for them, or because they were ag gressive enough to fight their way there. When the students on this cam pus want a better “Pen,” a more efficient “Pen” staff, tliey will do som(“thing about reorganizing the staff. “Pen” staff members should be elected to their position by the campus at large, or at least the editor should; and then, the other members of the staff should be e- lected by their respective classes. This certainlj' would take much of the politics and personal feeling out of The Pen and mean a more democratic student publication definitely sensitive to the feeling of the student body. Furthermore it M'oiild insure! greater efficiency as the staff members would feel a definite responsibility to the stu dents M’ho elected them to their po sitions. There i.s. also a feeling that there should be a closer feeling existing between the student governing body and the student publication. Let us not forget that point. IIow- e\-er at a later date we shall have more to siiy about the Student Council as we call our student gov erning body. Let us band together now, in a eoncen.trated effort to improve the standard and quality of our stud- dent publication. It is ours. It is our reflection to any who chance to read it. Let us be more keeidy interested in it. Shall we here dedi cate our first efforts to a better “Pen?” Charles G. Ilowell. Jr. WELCOME It is with i)leasure that we wel come to our campus this year three new members on the college facul ty, namely ili.ss (i. Baird, of the Engli.sh Department, ilr. ^IcStal- worth, of the Sociology Depart ment, and ilr. T. ]\Iayo. liead of tiie Music Department.
