Cross-Country Team Stuns
the Region’s Number One Team
St. Augustine’s, College men’s
cross-country team stunned
Liberty Baptist, the number one
ranked team in the NCAA
Southeast Regional, at the Camp
bell Univrsity Cross-Country Car
nival, September 10th.
Led by James Hammond,
Henry Jones, Donald Bond and
Chris Gibson, the Falcon Har
riers won 4 of the 6-4 mile races.
Hammond won the feature race
in 20:29, Jones won the 3rd race
easily in 20:34. Bond the 4th in
20:40, and Gibson the 5th in 20:58.
In the women’s competition,
Virginia Commonwealth Univer
sity from Richmond, Va., placed
five runners in the top thirteen to
finish ahead of St. Aug’s, 1:05:00
tol:05:32 over a two mile course.
St. Aug’s Denise Levy placed 2nd
over-all in a time of 12:33. Sheila
Ingam placed 4th in 12:48 and
Carla Williams was 8th in 13:11.
Coach George Williams, who is
rapidly becoming one of the more
recognized coaches in the nation,
was disappointed in the loss but
responded, “Our ladies ran well,
probably losing because clutch
performers Marcia Dunkley and
Terry Gordon were absent. We’ll
see an improvement next time
out.”

Cross-Country Champions Set to
Challenge for National Recognition
St. Augustine’s College, the
defending NAIA District 26 and
CIAA Conference Men’s cross
country champions are set to
challenge for national recogni
tion in 1983. After a disappointing
1982 2nd place finish in the NCAA
Southeast Regional, the Falcons
are primed to win their first
NCAA Regional title.
Led by returning letterman
James Hammond, Gerald Cross,
Jerry McLean, Kevin McCants,
and Donald Bond, the Falcons
are expected" to field a very com
petitive group of young runners.
Hammond, a junior from Nor
folk, Virginia, is a two-time all-
CIAA/NAIA honoree and ran a
14:50 5000 meters outdoor. Cross,
a product of Kingston, Jamaica
joins Freshman Bahamian
Phillip McKenzie as potential
1984-1988 Olympic hopefuls from
the Caribbean. Cross was all
CIAA/NAIA in 1982 and McKen
zie has been leading this star-
studded team in daily practices.
Although academically in
eligible in 1982, Donald Bond
maintained his interest in the
sport and returns to assert his
1981 all-CIAA credentials. Retur
ning letterman and all-CIAA per
formers Kevin McCants and
Jerry McLean might have a dif
ficult time making this squad,
although still running outstan
ding in practice.
Coach George Williams and
assistants Billy Wright and Roy
Ector are working hard to lead
this talented group of runners to
their fullest potential. Asked
about the prospects for the
season Coach Williams replied,
“We are very excited about this
upcoming season. Never before
has a predominately black in
stitution had such a distinguished
cross-country program. I feel
confident our young men will rise
to the occasion.” Prospects are
indeed good for the upcoming
season as the Falcon harriers at
tempt to qualify for their fourth
NCAA Division II National
Championship appearance in five
years.
