March, 1993 THE PEN 7 Sports Disappointing end to Lady Falcons' basketball season By EMMANUEL NOUDEWO Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons ended the basketball season by losing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Asso ciation (CIAA) championship and the first found of the Na tional Collegiate Athletic As sociation NCAA division II ch^pionship. The Lady Falcons lost to Norfolk State University by two points at the CIAA championship in Richmond VA, February 27. Later, the team was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA divi sion II tournament by the Uni versity of South Carolina at Spartanburg. However, the Lady Fal cons ended the regular season with a 20-4-6 record. Also, Carolyn Brown emerged to become one of the best players in division II basketball. Coach Beverly Downing said the results reflect the work done. "We got at a high level with the small resources we had available," said Downing. Lack of leadership was one of the reasons why the team faded at the end of the season. "We concentrated so much on our sense of unity and family, that we forgot that the team needed a leader to carry the rest of the group," she said. Downing also said that she needed more resources to al low her to recruit new players to replace Carolyn Brown, Deidre Peay, Devonia Nixon, and Denise Johnson, who will be graduating in May. Answer in next issue St. Aug*s Williams appointed U.S. track team coach for lAAF world indoor championship By EMMANUEL NOUDEWO Saint Augustine's track and field head coach George Williams was recently ap pointed head coach of the United States track team for the International Amateur Athletics Federation (lAAF) World Indoor Championship. This is Williams' fourth international post. He has also served as assistant men's coach for the U.S./U.K. team in 1988 and for the U.S./U.K./U.S.S.R meet in 1990. In 1992, Williams was head coach for the U.S. team at the World cup in Havana, Cuba. Williams attributes his success to his athletes. "You can't be a successful coach without athletes. They have to accept what you want to teach them. The way you approach them is very important," he said. "Make their future a pri ority, not track. That is the greatest motivation for them to be successful in sport. God granted me the ability to deal with people." Williams has headed one of the most successful men's ind women's collegiate track programs in the U.S. His 16 seasons at St. Aug have brought a total of 67 conference championships and ■ 12 national championships in men's and women's cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. In dividual honors for Saint Augustine's athletes under Williams include 60 national champions and 265 All- Americans. One of Williams's top athletes was Antonio Petti grew, 1991 400 meter world champion. That year Williams was named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. At Saint Augustine's Col lege Williams has created a program that produces not only great athletes but also people who are otherwise successful in life. "There is no standard program in the world to copy from. You create something that is adapted to the needs of your family and community. Most of the kids I recruited were in need of sur vival and I felt that it was my responsibility to create a pro gram that will make them use their athletic abilities to get education and a better future," said Williams. St. Augustine's men's track team loses NCAA div. II indoor title after six year reign By EMMANUEL NOUDEWO Saint Augustine's men's track team lost its grip on the NCAA division II indoor track title this year after winning it six years in a row. The "Mighty Falcons" were runners-up to Abilene Christian of Texas by eight points, in the competition which took place at South Dakota, March 12-14. The Falcons were led by assistant coach Roy Ector, in the absence of head coach George Williams, who is coaching the US team at the World Indoor Track and Field championship in Toronto, Canada. James Shelton won the high jump, Keith Holley "the Chief won the triple jump, and the Falcon one-mile relay team took the first place. The Lady Falcons came in ninth. However, the per formances of some athletes were impressive. Tamara Powell took third place in the 400m. Now that the indoor track season is over, the Falcons are looking back to try to find out what went wrong. Fans believe the team was not well prepared and lacked discipline. "We went to the national (meet) with a negative attitude," said Randall Evans, one of growing stars in the sprint. Evans, a transfer student from St. Jack College, is very optimistic about the future of the team. "Things have changed since we lost the national title. Athletes have stopped coming to practice late. The whole team started coming together as one family, which is a key to success in any sport." Evans wants to win the outdoor title with the Falcons this year. Both Ector and Williams said there is much work to do. "I really feel bad losing the indoor track title, but that's life," said Williams. Just a reminder! Free your mind!
