8 THE PEN October, 1993 Sports Women players give soccer an extra kick By Emmanuel Noudewo Audra Noble and Celeste Scott are the only women play ers on Saint Augustine’s Col lege soccer team. They are not trying to become professional players, but to challenge every one who thinks women cannot play on a predominantly men's team. Noble has played soccer since the fifth grade, but when she got to college there were no female players on the soccer team. Despite her desire to play, she stopped because the team here was only all men's. “I always wanted to play, but I was scared by all these guys. However, after getting used to some players I met ev ery day on campus, the fear disappeared and I decided to try out for the team,”says Noble. Noble says at first, she was discriminated against by her teammates, who refused to pass the ball to her. She had to play harder in order to gain recogni tion and respect from the team. She feels that her role in the team is very strategic. “ During the games, most teams don’t pay attention to my presence on the field. I surprise them all the time,” adds Noble. Noble says she feels good after her first two games, and is ready to play hard. Unlike Noble, Scott had never played before. She went with Noble to practice one evening and decided to try out for the team. “ I never knew somebody could have so much fun on a Audra Noble, one of the women players of the Falcons soccer team, takes a breather from practice Pic. Ishmael Smith soccer field,” says Scott, who, according to Coach Alex Korgar, has improved a lot. Scott believes her fast im provement is due to the moti vation she gets from the play ers and the coach. By joining the Falcons soccer team, Scott and Noble follow the example of Shevaughn Gordon, who was the first woman to play on the team. By Emmanuel Noudewo Cross country- seeking the right pace By Emmanuel Noudewo St. Aug's women's and men's cross country teams are looking for the right pace that will enable them to win the C.I.A.A. championship and, hopefully, the N.C.A.A. regionals and nationals. The UNC cross country invitational, held in Chapel Hill on September 10, was the first test for the Falcons. According to Coach Harry Freeman, the first meet helped to show the level of the teams and put in perspective the work that has to be done. Some athletes in the men's team still have a lot of work to do. In the absence of Lamyaki Lobuku, who is sick, Joseph King and his teammates will have to work harder. “I think everything will be all right soon. This is just the beginning of the season, and some people take a while to catch the pace,” said King, who came fourth in Chapel Hill. Ronald Dickerson, one of the talents of the Falcons, hopes . the newcomers will make a posi tive contribution. The Lady Falcons Cross Country Track Team has been joined by two new runners, Antoinette Watkins and Tanya Smither, who can make a differ ence, according to the coaching staff. They had a good race in Chapel Hill. According to Latarsha Garris, the captain of the Lady Falcons, the team looks stron ger than last year’s. “We hope to make it at least to the regionals this year,” said Garris, who also observed that the only problem they have is that their class schedules do not allow all the members of the team to practice together. The mighty Falcons won the C.LA.A. championship last year, and made the regionals. By Emmanuel Noudewo Golf team wins visit to White House Saint Augustine's College men's golf team was honored at the White House on Septem ber 30,1993 by President Bill Clinton. The mighty Falcons golf team of Coach Lawrence Coleman won the National Minority College Champion ship, held on May 18-19, at the Manaki Golf Course in Cleve land, Ohio. Brian Diggs and his team mates defeated three-time na tional champions, Jackson State, by one stroke, 599-600. Torrence Allen, Brian Diggs, Gerald Coleman, Philip Terrel, Jason Parris, Steve Zamerick, and Harold Hurtt, led by Coach Coleman, have proved that St. Aug can rely on its golf team for national recog nition. Senior Comprehensive Exam October 23, 1993 8:30 a.m. Boy. Oil In Memoriam The Pen extends its condolences to the families and friends of Trevor Williams, Byron Exum, (recent graduates) and David Bullock (student) of SaintAugustine's College, who recently passed away. Lady Falcons volleyball team starts season well “We’re going to have a good season,” says Coach Clinton Reid of the Lady Fal cons volleyball. After an impressive start with the first two games of the season in Virginia, most play ers feel they are ready to do it again this year at the C.I.A.A. The Falcons beat Fayettville State 3-0 and Virginia State 3- 1. Among the players, are two new members, Christine Cunningham and Julia Sleweon, who replace Karen Plummer, Sandra Richards, and Janice Foskin, who gradu ated last Spring. "The players have im proved a lot," according to the coaching staff. “ Natasha Blyden is do ing much better. Lisa McPherson is getting in the game,” says Reid, who coached most of the players during their high school days in the Bahamas and Jamaica. Most of the players from last year's C.I.A.A. victorious campaign are still here. Coach Deborah Dove and Clinton Reid are very optimis tic. They believe that, with de termination, Captain Hilreth Hewitt will lead St. Aug to another C.I. A. A. title this year.
