The Saint Augustine's College Student Neuuspaper ^ Free * Volume A 4 No. 1 1315 Oakwood Ave / Raleigh NC 27610 September/October 1995 Saint Aug monrns the loss of Dr. Paul Vandergrift The late Dr. Paul Vandergrift, Jr. Senior Vice President /Provost by Natosha Kennedy Dr. Paul Frank Vandergrift, Senior Vice President and Provost, passed away suddenly on October 7, 1995, just one week after the death of St. Augustine’s alumna Bessie Delany, and just a week away from the convocation and the naming of the New Men's Hall of Residence. Dr. Vandergrift’s death comes as a shock to the St. Aug. family, especially the faculty and staff who worked closely with him on a daily basis. Dr. Graham Watt said, “Trying to keep things moving with the heart hurting is difficult.” Watt commented that he ate lunch with Dr. Vandergrift every day, and described him as “a real friendly guy with no ego trips.” Other, faculty and staff members working in the President’s Office were also shocked. Ms. Ada Farrar, the receptionist in the President’s Office recalls Dr. Vandergrift being in good spirits last Friday. Dr. Vandergrift had just arrived from Elizabeth City State University to begin his new tenure at St. Aug. on September 1,1995. Dr. Bernard Franklin, President of Saint Augustine’s College, said, “He, in a short period of time, made a tremendous impact and we were looking forward to his leadership." Dr. Franklin added tiiat although Dr. Vandergrift’s death is a loss to ail, “He would want us to keep moving forward.” So far, no one has been appointed to replace Dr. Vandergrift. Dr. Watt said that he did not know what approach would be taken in filling that vacant position. St. Aug. will pay a special tribute to Dr. Vandergrift during the convocation on October 12.
