Hermitage replaces its women with men Fall brings new faces by Vanetta Freeman PICTURE TIME- Tonya Tillett, public relations specialist; Dr. Graham Watt, vice-president, and Debra Derr, public relations and marketing director, are among new employees at St. Aug. Poet's words paint vivid scenes By Lisa Johnson Many students did not have a definite place to stay when they arrived on the campus of Saint Augustine’s College Aug. 19. Some of them had to wait four days before they could be placed in permanent dormitories because Goold Hall, one of the men’s dormitories, was closed. There were many entering freshmen this semester. As a result, some changes had to be made before classes began; Students were put in temporary rooms. Barbara Broadaway, assistant director of housing, says that the bathrooms in Goold Hall were backed up and that the dorm had to be closed for renovations. “We have to think about the well-being of our students,” says Broadaway. It was decided that Marine Band strikes up fun By Saralee Johnson Under the direction of Major Timothy W. Foley, “The President’s Own” Marine Band performed at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, Nov, 20. The event was co-sponsored by the News & Observer and St. Augustine’s College, Comprised of drum and fife majors, and 32 drums and fifes, the Marine Band, America’s oldest professional musical organization brought many to their feet. Hermitage Hall would be a temporary residence for some students. In tradition. Hermitage Hall has been an honors dorm for women with 3.0 GPA or better. With Goold Hall closed and the other men’s dormitories full, space was needed. As a result, they were placed in Hermitage Hall and the previous residents went to either Latham, Weston, or Delany Hall. LTC Gilbert A. Knowles, the dean of student affairs, says that there are at least 60 spaces on campus for women, but only 5 spaces for men. “There wasn’t enough space for the men so it just made sense to put the men who remained withoijt rooms in Hermitage Hall and fill spaces in female dormitories with the women who used to stay in Hermitage,”he says. The changes don’t end at Hermitage Hall; Delany Hall is included as well. Hermitage Hall will soon be the male honors dorm for 22 students and Delany Hall will be the new female honors dorm. LTC Knowles feels that there should be honors dormitories for men and women. To be considered for the honors dormitories, students with an “A” or “B” GPA. Broadaway says that she knows the changes in Hermitage Hall surprised its previous residents, but goes on to say, “One of the things I like about the Hermitage ladies is that they always bounce back,” by Rica Wilson “I arose this morning and tuned my ear to the melodic sounds of bird talk. Some birds were singing louder than others; however, I painted a picture in my mind of what each hand made creature looked like.” No matter whether the red bird was really blue or vice versa, Jaki Shelton Green maintained “reality is what you say, and it is simply because you say so," The African-American poetess embraced the college and community with her poetic words in late October. In a workshop she facilitated on Wednesday, Green recalled that her early interest in writing began in church. As a child she was fascinated by the large hats the women wore. At seven years, the pious youth developed stories from the hats out of her vivid imagination. She remembers the fruit hats, feathered hats, and her favorite, a hat depicting men fishing. by Kimberly Shaw Saint Aug has some fresh faces walking around campus this semester, additions to the “Falcon Family.” The new employees in Public Relations are Debra Derr and Tonya Tillett.
