The Pen November 1998 Sports In a cup of her own on an all male team By Jamie Harris Correspondent Do you think someone who loves to eat chicken, foo-foo, likes talk ing on the phone, going shopping, keeping her hair and nails done is on the all mall soccer team at St. Augustine’s College? Racheal Doherty, is indeed apart of the team. Doherty, a sophomore, is origi nally from Sierre Leon, West Africa, but grew up in Toronto, Canada and now lives in Richmond, VA. Following in the influence and footsteps of her father, Doherty de cided to play soccer for the fun of it. She plays various positions on St. Augs team during her two year stay here and it does not bother her that she is the only female on the team. “Sometimes, it can get hard, but when I am playing I do not think of the gender differences and I don’t think my teammates think of it ei ther. We all are one, but have dif ferent skills and moments where we all are stars,” said Doherty. According to Doherty, it was not easy making the team, but by “pro viding my dedication and motiva tion, I showed my head coach, Alex Kroger, that I could be a team player and not a female player.” Doherty is in a cup of her own. As she is striving to tour with the European Women’s Professional Soccer Team, being apart of St. Aug’s team has made a big impact on her life. “I try to do my best at whatever I do, and keep my head up as much. I am not arrogant, but a humble person who is on a mission.” There are some advantages and Cross-Country wins another title By Antoinette Togba ' Feature Editor The crowd at the 1998 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cross-country Championships in Salisbury screamed as they saw a runner appearing from the woods. It is Fred Adongo, a junior at Saint Augustine’s College. “Come on Freddie” they screamed, as no other runners where visible on the dirt path behind him. As the Ghanaian native sprints through the finish line a minute or two passes and a burgundy uniform appears from the bushes. It is a run ner from Shaw University. Right behind him are two other run ners; one from Bowie State and the other from St. Aug. As they battle to the finish run ner, Joshua Hamilton, a junior at the college comes in fourth. The other team members, James White, Brandon Saint-Den- nis and Arthur Hickman, follow shortly afterwards. The women’s team, who won their championship less than an hour be fore, ran to the finish line to congratulate the men who have unofficially won the HIV/STD Counseling & Testing Tuesdays 10:00 - 12:00 Joseph G. Doherty advantages are that she gets to learn more about soccer on a different level and a different play ing field. Her endurance has im proved, and her strength gets better and better as the seasons go by. The disadvantages that Doherty experience is that, everyone tries to be too helpful and, “It feels at times that I have fifteen trainers, instead of teammates, but its fun.” She is proud being apart of the team and says that, “as long as I have the strength and the support, I will keep on playing. I am very high strong and believe in myself, so put ting up a fight is another addition to my personality.” Her role models are limited, she believes strength, faith, love, respect and accomplishing your goals all lie within herself which makes her the perfect role model for herself. St. Aug did not place in the soc cer championships last season, but according to Doherty, the team is working harder to win a title this year, and “by the grace of God, we will do well and maintain a record amongst other school.” meet. “We’ve won 15 out of the 20 times that we have competed here,” says Harry Freeman, St. Aug’s cross country coach, for the men’s team', who is also a 1983 graduate and former runner of the college.
