2 Editorial The Pen November 1998 Look Out! We are on our way Welcome to the new PEN. We have not been in existence for a while due to problems beyond our control. The last edition of the Pen came out on February 1998, which con sisted of events and happenings that were over a semester old. The reason for the missing issues were splattered on the front page of the February issue saying, “Sorry you haven’t heard from us. The Pen was unable to maintain its publication schedule, due to equip ment and budgetary problems...our regular schedule will be resumed...” Unfortunately, it did not happen that way. We still had equipment problems and money was not coming quickly enough. We had only one computer, which was too old and gave us prob lems on top of problems. Even the staff in the Technology Center could not fix the computer problems we had. With no money, staff members had to come out of their pockets at times to make the im possible, possible. Who is there to blame for the neglect of the student publication, and the silence that was placed upon the student body? Well, we can give you a list of names and reasons why we think the student publication was put on the back burner, but that same list of names will be irrelevant today. Since then, this has become a new year and age for the PEN, and those same questionable names of people has lended a helping hand this year, to make the impossible become possible. With a new staff and new adviser, Calvin L. Hall, the student pub lication is now on its way forward. Slowly, but surely, the equipments are coming in (even though they are not new, they will do, for now). The money situation still have a few kinks to be worked out, but hopefully the problem will be handled soon. So, if you don’t hear from us for a while, you have our permission to address the adminis tration, and maybe then they will listen to what we have to say. We plan to bring back the good old days of journalism when the paper reports the news and keeps the students well informed of events and happenings, on a monthly basis. Our pledge is to keep you unified, educated, entertained and at the same time, stimulating your minds and actions. I challenge the St. Aug community to support the PEN. Write us, and let us know how we can better serve you. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the class of 2002 and to all members of the PEN staff. We look forward to a prosperous PEN newspaper with a new graphic look. I encourage you to support the Student Government Association 1998-1999, for they are your voice as well as us, the PEN, your stu- jent publication. EDITOR-IN-CHEIF Neice L. It is a real shame that men and women must go at each other in mind to mind combat! Both par ties want the same thing, such as respect and maybe looking for a man or woman to treat them right. In the end, it is a natural disaster for both parties. Hey guys check this out! Have you ever went to a club and you scoped this fine honey out in the crowd, and you want to dance with her? You start dancing with her. Things are going smoothly, till she turns around and ask, “What arc you doing?” ‘What I am doing’?, the guy replies, ‘I am dancing like everyone else, just getting my groove on’. She looks at you strange and walks off. Then when you see her dancing again, she’s either danc ing with another guy who is worse than you, or in front of a window. I found out that real ladies in the house will dance with you, because they believe in keeping it real. Many ladies fool themselves by getting with the bad guys, who later break their heart after a one night stand! That guy that you turned away at the club whom you asked, “what are you doing?” may not have the funds that you so call desire, but he treats you like diamonds and pearls. It is not all about the money. It is about giving someone a chance to get to know you and start a good relationship. Why must we battle each other when it comes down to the simplest of things. A brother that is hard working and knows what he wants out of life, in addition to working at Food Lion, is so often overlooked. Sometimes you guys do the same thing to our ladies, but you ladies should never put every guy in the same category. All of this can add stress on each other and cause con fusion, plus frustration on both the African male and female. Being honest from the beginning and putting a litde trust in a per son, you will soon see that you was glad to give that person a chance. I don’t mind for a female to tell me honestly that she is single, talk ing to someone, engage or married, as long as she is honest from the start, then I am cool with it. At least be polite when letting one down instead of being rude, stub born, and immature, because you might have passed up your future husband or wife. Think about it, or you will have a mis-education unlike recording art ist Lauryn Hill. - Be truthful and understanding, for you would want the same treat ment for yourself. Battle of the opposite sex still rages from females perspective By Pebbles Garrett Managing Editor Women, if you disagree with my friend on the ‘Batde of the Sexes,’ then stay right here, this is the real deal. Sure, we have had our fiin with our "Nights of Adventure, ” and we have partied until the sun came up. This does not mean that every guy we meet for the first time we have a one night stand. That is a low blow. I mean, think about it? If you are still pulling an all niter, you are out of your mind. Come on ladies!, this is almost the dawn into a new millennium. Out with the old and in with the new. These day we are the players and the men are the playees. Men today feel that we are high maintenance and we do not have the time to baby them. This is the rea son why a majority of our brothers turn to white women and ‘dis us totally. By this time, we are angry and wondering why he chose her over me. These days we do not have to sell ourselves short for any man. I hear a lot of men say, that we have too much mouth and that we are too independent. To myself, in these days and times, men are lazy, do not want to work and they want to live off your bank account. Why? What has happened to the hard working man who goes out and brings home the bacon? Don’t get me wrong, there are some good men out here, you just have to search a little harder. Please do not be desperate and chase down every man you see. Also, do not give up the goods to every man. Remember, everything that looks good, is not always good.
