College Crown
Billy Wiliams, Jr.
Co-Editor
One of the most competitive races this year
within the Student Government Association
(SGA) is for the title of Miss Saint Augustine’s
College.
The six contestants running for Miss St.
Aug include: Florencia Hunt, a senior
majoring in physical education; Shannon R.
Jones, a junior majoring in pre-medicine;
VaShawn Marshall, a junior majoring in
broadcasting communications; Charisse S.
Pinkett, a junior majoring in pre-law with a
minor in political science; Rahmira Shimc
Rufus, a junior majoring in computer science
with a minor in music and Stephanie Nicole
Taylor, a junior majoring in elementary
education and with a minor in biblical studies.
This year, not, only will the Miss St. Aug
contestants have to give a speech on speech
night, but they will also contend in a pageant.
The Emery Gymnasium will play host to the
event, were the young ladies will show their
talents, speaking skills and critical thinking
skills.
Each contestant has issues focusing on
what they want to do as Miss St. Aug and
their reason for wanting to become Miss St.
Aug.
Pinkett’s issues include networking with
surrounding universities and colleges to
improve our communities and establishing a
mentor relationship with incoming freshman
to help make the whole transition from high
school to college easier.
“I want to become Miss St. Aug because I
have had experience in being the class queen
for the last three years, and I feel I am ready
to take on the major role as Miss St. Aug.
Taylor’s issues include the concerns of the
students, religious aspects of the campus and
community service.
“I am seeking this position so that I may
represent St. Augustine’s College with the
utmost respect, and to be of service to all
mankind.
Speech night will be held on April 22 on
the second floor of the student union, at 7:00
PM. Elections will be held on April 23 on
the first floor of the union.
“I believe the voting will be about what
the candidates can do, because people are tired
of the same old popularity standard,” Ricardo
Hamer, a freshman majoring in computer
information systems said.
Christina Shamberger feels that people will
vote for the people that are popular.
“It shouldn’t be that way, but people are
going to vote for who they know or who their
friends know,” Shamberger said.
Other positions that will be elected in the
student government include SGA president,
SGA vice-president, attorney general, chief
justice and class officers.

Platform/Issues
♦ I would like to deal with student
morale and help the relationships
amongst the student body as a whole.
Why do you want to become
Miss Saint Augustine’s College:
I believe that there Is a lapse of
communication between the students
and administration. The students feel
that they are not heard and the
administration feels that it is not
appreciated. I would like to be the
mediator between the tow, by easing
tension on both parties.
Therefore, the administration will
become cognizant of student necessities
and Issues and the students will
comprehend the administration
positions as situations arise and their
resolution. I want to extinguish the
fires, not start them.
