4 ST. AUGUSTINE’S RECORD ItKl'OKT OF THK PHKSIDKXT (Continued from Page 1) or perhaps at all. At all events a larger endow ment is needed and more generous support from the region that the College most largely serves. As a beginni^ig in this direction the Diocese of ^orth Carolina is again including in its budget a small appropriation to the College. We hope that the other dioceses in the State will also come to our assistance in this way. The Alumni of the Insti tution should also dcveloj) j)lans for increasing their support of it both by gifts and by aid in adding to our enrollment. In connection with this latter effort representatives from St. Augus tine’s have visited from time to time the various schools aided by the American Church Institute for N’t'groes. We hope that as time goes on there will be a larger number of their graduates en rolled at St. Augustine’s. We wish to acknowledge with gratitude the aid received from the (ieneral Education Board which enabled one of our teachers to take a year of graduate study and also the helj) that has been given by the 'Prnstees of the Slater Fund toward the salaries of two teachers. We hope that these Eoards will continue their helpful interest. St. Aonks IIosi’iTAi, St. Agnes Hospital with its Training School for Kurses continues its good work in Health Educa tion and in tlie relief of suffering among our Negro i)eople. Tlie high rating given it by the various accrediting agencies and the warm com mendation received from re])resentatives of such Boards as the Duke Endowment and the Rosen- wald Fund should nuike us proud that our Church is being given credit for such a noteworthy insti tution. During the )>ast year there have been almost 18,000 hos])ital days, over S)00 bed i)atients and about 800 operations. About 1100 out-patients have bw'n treated at the Clinic. Tue Bishop Tuttlk Sciioor, The Bishop Tuttle School for Yoiing Women who are j)reparing to enter fields of Social Service or Religious Education has b(>en maintained for a number of years as a special ])roject of the A’’ational Woman’s Auxiliary. Our (church is the first and only Church to provide such an op portunity for training so that this school is widely recognized a.s being a distinctive contribution of our Episcopal Church to the needs and develop ment of the Negro people. Thus far however its merits have been recognized and its graduates used more largely outside of our Church than within it. 'I'here is still work to be done in securing suitable candidates from our Xegro parishes and in providing them opportunities for service within the Church. All of the units of the work at St. Augustine’s are endeavoring to function as real factors in the development of the Xegro people wuth special reference to the increased usefulness of our own Church in this important field. We are not en tirely satisfied with the results achieved thus far nor with the response of the Church in this sec tion or in any other, to the great opportunities and obligations of this field of Christian Service. The harvest is great, those who are vitally con cerned with its ingathering are all too few. We ask our friends to pray the Lord of the harvest that He may assist in increasing the laborers and resources in this field of His work. Respectfully submitted, EDGAR H. GOOLD, President.
