January 19. 1961 NORTH C^.ROLINA ..^SLEYAN Page 2 C j J il 11 £ j\J 0 f This Friday, January 20, 1961 the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, will be administered the oath of office by Earl v.arren, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The ceremony of inauguration is firmly marked bj? traditions and is a symbol of unity for most Americans/ Because it is a justi fication of authority, the occa sion has always been a solemn one marked by dignity and simplicity. The inaugurations of George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Abra ham Lincoln, Franklin D, Ro sevelt and Dwight D. i^Jisenhov/er have coi> tributed significant changes and patterns in the ceremony and the inaugural address. John Kennedy has said, ’’The next year, the next decade, an alL likelihood the next generation, will require more bravery and wis dom on our' part than any period in our history.” Kennedy believes the United States must face up to and sic- mount a double challenge—change in environment and rise of new states. His discussion oi5 this matter refers to Arnold Toynbee's long-range philosophy of ’’chal lenge and response.” The question now is whether we will be able to meet this chal lenge with the needed bravery and wisdom, 0 Inadvertently, the name of Douglas Hedgpeth was omitted from the roster of the staff. Sincerely, JA Dear Editor: I would like to bring to the attention of the college a poten** tial danger that exists for all persons connected with or visit ing the vi/esleyan College campus off U.S. 301 . I’M sure the Board of Trustees does not realize the situation or it would probably have been cor rected. At night it is extremely hard for a driver to judge the correct distance to the turn off. No need to say this proves dange3> ous especially in the face of on coming cars.
