Community
Urged To Be
^Responsive ’
Rev. Leon Russell, speaking at
the opening worship convocation
on the campus, urged the Wesleyan
College community to be “respon
sive to their responsibility.”
Approximately 400 students, pro
fessors, and friends of the college
gathered in the improvised chapel
within the new Cafeteria Building
to share in the opening worship
service.
Rev. Russell is pastor of Front
Street Methodist Church in Burling
ton. He spoke from the text, “This
is the condemnation, that light is
come into the world, and men
loved darkness rather than light.”
He lamented the fact many are not
willing to see or accept responsi
bility.
“Many others,” he said, “see and
are not responsive. The only way
we at Wesleyan can pay our debt
to all who have made this college
possible is to be responsive to our
opportunities for knowledge.”

Favorite Pastime
Among America’s favorite pas
times, sports rank first. They are
an intrinsic part of our democratic
heritage. Just as we have adopted
the form of government instituted
by the Greeks years before Christ,
so have we adopted their love of
games.
This competitive spirit is so
much a part of the American
makeup that we have founded our
entire economic system upon it.
We are a nation of individualists,
and in this modern, highly organiz
ed world of specialization, we often
find it necessary to assent that in
dividuality.
There are different methods of
accomplishing such a task and we
feel that sports, whether one is a
participant directly or indirectly,
is the answer to which thousands of
Americans turn.
Not only can sports aid us as in
dividuals but as societies endeavor
ing to live together harmoniously.
Student Newspaper
Will Publish Ads
Plans are being made to carry
commercial advertising in the niext
edition of the student newspaper,
which is scheduled for publication

The staff was handicapped in th«
preparation of this edition due to
the limited number of students
available for work, and there was
not sufficient time to solicit adver
tising.
