It is the voice of you, the student body, as it attempts to record the todays and tomorrows of the next nine months. We state our policy: —With honesty and accuracy cover the news. —Entertain vigorous, constructive ideas. —Seek always the truth. —Let the paper be the mouthpiece of the students and faculty. —Energetically separate the worthwhile from the worthless. —Yield in no manner from the policy set forth. —Adhere to the canons of journalism. —Name the names, keep the reader informed, what ever the issue. Purely Personal There seems to be a lot of frustration and strain on students at the beginning of the year. The core of this trouble is that we come to school under an illusion, wavmg the banners of “summer resolutions” high above our heads. Those of us who played through high school maybe promise ourselves the Dean’s list. We are going to turn over a new leaf, studying every chance we get. No more partying and playing around for us! Work! Work! Work all the time. Or maybe we are among those trying to assume a new personality as if it were as simple as chang ing clothes. We feel that we can get a new start here—where no one knows our past disappointments at not being asked to the Junior-Senior, or being elected as an officer to something or our yearning to participate in sports. We have just got to be popular, to be a leader. Or maybe we are among those students who came down a rung when we hit college and suddenly find that we no longer hold the monopoly on intelligence that we once held in high school. Suddenly we have to fight for recognition. -n • All of these students came to school under an illusion of grandeur in some form. They expect miracles and are frustrated when things do not work out for the-m like they planned. , ^ „ They have forgotten that they can not undo m a tew weeks characteristics that took eighteen or nineteen years to build. Vann Massey, President of the Student Government Associ ation hero at Wesleyan. A native of Ahoskie, North Caro lina, Vann completed the first eleven years of his education at Ahcskie High School. He is a grad uate of Hargrave Military Acad emy, Chatham, Virginia. Vann holds the most important student position in the structure of Student Government. And it is be cause of his efforts that the SGA holds the position on campus that it does. As Coach Moe Bauer put it, “The SGA was not functioning at any outstanding capacity at the time Vann was elected president. When he went into office, the se cond semester of I960, it began to grow and assume the leadership role on campus. And the main reason for this was Vann. His leadership qualities as to getting things done, and his desire to have the best for Wesleyan College help ed the student organization get on its feet.” Ready at all times to express himself concerning the importance of a well organized SGA, Vann states, “I am all for Student Gov ernment because students grow when they assume the responsi bility of discipline, or organizing themselves into groups that pro mote the efficiency of campus ac tivities such as the newspaper, an nual and various commissions. “We all realize how important it is for everyone to establish the VANN MASSEY traditions, customs, or habits this year that we will want to be a part of Wesleyan in the future.” Vann’s hobbies include water activities and traveling, along with camping, politics, and adventure. He plans to go abroad soon aboard a tramp steamer. This summer Vann spent four weeks at Camp Don Lee as a coun selor. He also traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The remain der of the summer was spent in preparing himself and the SGA as an organization for orientation and other activities which were pertin ent to our college. Schedule Listed For Concerts And Lectures College officials have announced the schedule of its second annual Concert and Lecture Series. All programs are free and open to the public. The events will take place at 8:15 p. m. on the days indicated. Most of the programs will be given in the College Chapel, but some are scheduled for the College’s new Student Union Building. Events in the series are: Friday, October 27—Thelma Sas ser, pianist. Tuesday, November 7 — Robert Conant, harpsichorist. Tuesday, November 21 — Joel Carter, baritone, and Geraldine Matthews, pianist. Thursday, November 30 — Dr. Harlow Shapley, Department of Astronomy, Harvard University; public lecture: “Galaxies and Man’s Place in the Universe.” Tuesday, December 5—^Wolfgang Fetsch, pianist. Tuesday, December 12—Wesley an Singers Christmas Concert. Tuesday, January 9—North Caro lina String Quartet. Tuesday, February 13—William and Thelma Sasser, duo-pianists. Tuesday, March 6—R. Lee Bos- tian, pianist. Tuesday, March 29—Grant Rey nard, artist; public lecture: “A Guide to Understanding Modern Art.” Monday, April 9—Women’s Choir of W. C. U. N. C., Greensboro. Tuesday, April 17—Richard Cox, baritone. Tuesday, May 15 — Wesleyan Singers Spring Concert. Volleyball Game Saturday morning at nine o’clock in the volleyball area will be the scene of one of the toughest battles in the history of Wesleyan College, as the fiery students meet the frus trated faculty in a volleyball tournament. Faculty members participating in the event will be President Col lins, Dr. Moore, Dr. Hailey, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Helwig, Mr. Gay, and Dr. Bauer. Student team members have not been announced. The game will be conducted ac cording to Men’s Official Volley ball Rules. Because the students have challenged the faculty, it will be up the the students to furnish competent officials.
