Page 4 THE WESLEYAN DECREE Wednesday, May 6, 1964 Wesleyan Places Third In Golf And Tennis College Of Charleston Captures Individual Titles In Tournament LYNN HOLDEN RETURNS SMASH IN TOURNEY St. Andrews Gets Golf Championship By DAVID REEVES The College of Charleston tennis team won individual titles in every event except the No. 6 singles bracket to take home the team champion ship in the first annual DIAC tennis tournament. The team was composed of Billy Silcox, Mark Ilane, Bill Gand, Neil Draisin, Tom Holst, and Mickey Bell who couldn’t be beaten a.? they racked up a total of 52 points. The tournament consisted of 9 brackets; 6 singles and 3 doubles. The brackets were ar ranged according to ability. The No. 1 players from each school played in the No. 1 bracket. The teams were awarded 2 points for every match one of its players won. Chaiken Gets Bye In the No. 1 bracket Bob Chaiken from St. Andrews drew a bye in the first round. Mike Pratt from Wesleyan beat Russell Jones from Charlotte 6-0, 6-0. Billy Silcox from Charleston and Don Parsons from Methodist drew byes. In the isecond round Chaiken beat Pratt 6-0, 6-1 to move into the semi-final round against Billy Silcox who had defeated Par sons 6-0, 6-1. Silcox won the first set easily by 6-1 against Chaiken. He had a tough time in the second set but battled to a 6-4 victory and became champion in bracket number one. Mark Ilane emerged as champion in bracket number two. In the first round Gary Barteau of Wesleyan, Mark Hane of Charleston, and John Handy of Methodist drew a bye. Vann Taylor defeated Barry Grice 6-1, 6-3. In the second round Vann Taylor of St. Andrewis defeated Gary Barteau 6-2, 6-1. Mark Ilane defeated John Handy 6-0, 6-1. In tlie final round John Hane soundly defeated Taylor to win the championship of bracket two 6-0, 6-0. Louis Womble of Wesleyan, Bill Gand of the College of Charleston and Larry Varner of St. Andrews drew a bye in the first round in bracket num ber three. Jim Ludwig of Me thodist was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Jay Currin of Charlotte. Bill Gand defeated Larry Varner 6-1, 6-3 to gain the right to play in the final round. Louis Womble won the first set 6-2 but Currin battled back to take a 7-5 victory in the second set. Womble then decided the match with a smashing 6-1 victory in the final iset. Bill Gand won the title defeating Womble 6-0, 6-2 in the championship round. Bracket number four was domi nated by the play of Neil Drai sin from Qiarleston. In the fiiist round Bill Campbell of St, An drews, Rick D’Lassandro of Methodist, and Gil Wiley of Wesleyan drew a bye. Dratein beat Art Meyer of Charlotte 6-1, 6-1, to move into the 2nd round against Campbell, Drai sin defeated Campbell 6-1, 6-3 to gain the championship round. Gil Wiley soundly defeated D'Lasisandro 6-0, 6-1 to play Draisin for the championship, Draisin won tlie first set easily 6-0. In the second set Wiley battled back but was beaten 6-4, giving the title to Draisin, Sparky Rapeley, Tim Leon ard and Truong Nguyen drew a bye in the first round in bracket five, Tom Holst of Charleston defeated Bobby Burns of Charlotte 6-2, 6-1 to move into the 2nd round against Sparky Rapeley. Holist defeated Hapeley 6-0, 6-1, Tim Leonard of St, Andrews defeated Truong Nguyen of Wesleyan 6-3, 6-3 to move into the final round against Holst for the title, Tom Holst had a rough time against Leonard but won 6-3, 8-6. Holden Loses In Bracket six of the singles matches Ted Sky, Mickey Bell and Dave McArthur drew a bye. Lyn Holden put up a bat tle but lost to Javan Reid of St, Andrews 6-4, 6-2, Ted Sky of Methodist was defeated by Reid 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. Bell defeated McArthur 6-0, 6-1 to move into the final round againist Reid, Reid then took the championship by de feating Bell 6-3, 6-0 and be came the only champion that was not from The College of Charleston, The doubles matches were di vided into three brackets. The number one and two players were put into bracket one. Number 3 and 4 players from each college competed in brack et two. Number 5 and 6 play ers competed in bracket six. In the first round of the doubles matches in bracket one Bob Chaiken and Vann Tay lor of St. Andrews defeated Don Parsons and John Handy of Methodilst 6-0, 6-2 to move into the second round. Mike Pratt and Louis Womble who had drawn a bye in the first round faced Chaiken and Tay lor. Chaiken and Taylor defeat- tvl Pratt and Womble 6-0, 6-2 to move into the final round. Hane and Silcox from Charles ton faced Grice and Jones from Charlotte in the second round and won 6-3, 6-1. In the final round Silcox aind Hane easily defeated Chaiken and Taylor 6-0, 6-3 to win the championship. Reach 2nd Round Larry Varner and Bill Camp bell of St, Andrews defeated Jim Ludwig and Rick D’Las sandro 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round, Varner and Campbell then defeated Currin and Meyer 6-1, 6-1 to reach the final round. Gil Wiley and Gary Bareteau were defeated in the second round by Draisin and Grand 7-5, 6-1, Draisin and Grand had a tough time win ning the title but managed to gain a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Varner and Campbell, Brackett III of the doubles matches was won by Holst and Bell from the College of Charleston, They defeated Reid and Leonard 6-4, 6-2 to gain the second round matches against Sky and Rapley. Holst and Bell emerged the victors 6-0, 6-2 to move into the final round. Bliss and Burns were defeated by Holden and Nguyon in a close battle 4-6, 6-3, 8-6 in the second round. Holst and Bell defeated Wesleyan's Holden and Nguyen for the championship 6-1, 6-2. The final standings were as foUows; first place was won by the College of Charleston that amassed a total of 52 points; they were followed by St. Andrews College with 26 points; Wesleyan College with 12 points; Charlotte College with 2 points; and Methodist College who couldn’t manage a single point. St. Andrews Presbyterian Col lege of Laurinburg was the winner of the first annual Dixie Intcrcollegiate Athletic Confer ence golf tournament which was held April 30 and May 1, N.C,W,C,, host and favorite for the tournament, which was held on the windswept Ben- venue Country Club Course, finished third behind St, An drews and second place Lynch burg College, St, Andrews took a com manding seven shot lead at the end of the finst day. Medalists honors for the two- day affair went to Bill Mclnnis of St. Andrewis. He shot a pair of 77’s for a 154 total which held up in the inclement wea ther. Buzz Barker of Wesleyan tied Bill Goodale and Zon Law of St. Andrews for runner up medalist with a total of 156. However, the honor went to Bill Goodale in a sudden death playoff which saw Law elimi nated in the 37th hole and Barker on the 38th. Other scores and team posi tions for the tourney were as follows: 1st place—^St. Andrews Vi'ith a total score of 639; 2nd place—Lynchburg College with a total of 651; Wesleyan College with 670; Methodist College with 672; Charlotte with 687; and In 6th place — the College of Charleston with 704. The Officer Candidate School is a 17-week training program conducted at Yorktown, Va. The curriculum covers courses in navigation, seamanship, communications, ordnance and gunnery, damage control, anti- submarie warfare, military jus tice and Coast Guard opera tions. Since the Coast Guard has only about 3,000 officens on active duty each officer is an important member of the team. It also means that you may have a chance to assume com mand responsibility early in your career.
